My favorite DCeased volume so far
DCeased: Dead Planet DC, collects issues 1-7 Zatanna finds John Constantine, drinking alone at the Oblivion Bar. John says, “I’m not alone, Zee.” and we see ghosts of dead heroes. Five years after escaping Earth, the Justice League get a distress call. The source Cyborg. The League return to Earth and locate Cyborg’s head. Things go to Hell quick. Wonder Woman kills Green Arrow, Black Canary kills Wonder Woman and maybe accidentally Superman too. The wounded Superman is taken to Poison Ivy’s Garden Cut to Arsenal’s death via the DCeased hero Fire. Enter Shadowpact. They been saving survivors for years. Enter one of my favorites, Swamp Thing. Cyborg says “There’s a cure.” I was not expecting that. Cut to Australia and Shadowpact. Another sanctuary is there, the Bunker. Enter the DCeased Plastic Man. He’s legit scary. So long to Shadowpact members Blue Devil and Ragman. Zatanna ends Plastic Man courtesy of Hellfire – it burns through anything and anyone. The survivors learn the Bunker is home to the most selfish people alive – Penguin, Maxwell Lord, Professor Ivo, Jason Blood, and others. Jason Blood/the Demon Etrigan warns John that Trigon is coming. Inside the Bunker is an imprisoned Floronic Man. He’s been tortured to produce food. Not happy about that, Swamp Thing kills Maxwell Lord. Enter an android army of Amazos. Detective Chimp and John track down Mr. Miracle. Superman and Mary Marvel do the same with Black Canary and DCeased Green Arrow. The good guys arrive on New Genisis to negotiate a deal with Metron, New God collector of knowledge (and stuffed animals allegedly). Metron is agreeable to the terms. Darkseid returns. I was not expecting that! Constantine and crew arrive at the hidden city of Nanda Parbat, welcomed by Deadman. John is looking to collect the Spear of Destiny. Rama Kushna and Deadman pay the price for standing in John’s way. Next stop, the Rock of Eternity. DCeased Captain Marvel Jr. kills Red Hood. Cassandra Cain grabs the Wizard Shazam’s staff and takes out Marvel Jr. The heroes discover a cure. Team effort. Big Barda is the guinea pig. The cure works. Meanwhile, Prof. Ivo unleashes his version of the cure, his swarm of Amazos. Enter the Phantom Stranger. He chats with John, Zatanna, and Jason Blood. Trigon arrives and scorches Paris. The League battle and defeat the Amazos thanks to Cyborg. Batman and Superman arrive at the Bunker as does John. Constantine finds a use for the corrupted souls, a means to power Ragman’s cloak. Trigon is trouncing Zatanna and the Phantom Stranger when John arrives, powered up by Ragman’s cloak, Fate’s helmet and amulet, Xanadu’s crystal ball, and the Wizard’s Shazam staff. It still isn’t enough. Exit Constantine. Enter Superman. John is the new Deadman and possesses Trigon and puts the Spear of Destiny to use, ending the threat of Trigon. A happy ending of sorts. Two billion people cured. Best Quotes. Kilowog – “You better be careful down there, Poozers. I’d feel pretty bad having to destroy you.” Green Arrow – “Monstrous hordes are the worst kind of hordes.” Poison Ivy to Black Canary – “I will not risk the lives of all the people here so you can cling to a corpse.” Jim Gordon – “I’m not going to lie. I never imagined Batman sewing.” Maxwell Lord – “I don’t take orders from a walking houseplant.” Constantine to Mr. Miracle – “… We need your help stealing the throne from a God.” Batman – “You’re not dead, Scott Free.” Mr. Miracle – “And you’ve shrunk, Batman.” Constantine to Phantom Stranger – “You’re just disapproval in a fedora, aren’t you?” Nice art. I enjoyed the inclusion of the Variant covers. Big cast. Zatanna narrates. My favorite volume so far. I’m a Constantine fan so nice to see him shine. Highly recommended. Giving it 5 stars for the scope of the story. Many characters get their moments in the spotlight.
