Can you see the display at night without touching it? (Other answer to this is unclear)

You can only see the display at night if the room is very dark and you have it set to so the Smart Nightlight is on. When you do this, you will be able to see the display, but it is not bright enough to be a nightlight. If the room has any light at all the Smart Nightlight does not activate and you cannot see the display very well. When you hit the snooze button on the top it does light up quite brightly, but that only stays on for 10 seconds.

How long does battery last?

It's a standard battery maybe 2 months. Alkaline lasts a little longer.

Is there a way to increase the contrast between the numbers and the background? It is hard to see during the daylight.

There is a way to light during the day. Put a piece of tape on the top of light sensor (which is on top of the clock). It will cost more battery energy, may need battery replacement more often than usual cases.

Does it require batteries?

Yes. It requires 3 AAA batteries, which are NOT shipped with the clock. It has a soft chirp alarm, that increases in frequency and loudness the longer you sleep. Caution: I accidentally pressed a button in the back as I lifted the clock off the table. And the time changed to the 24-hour display. So read your instruction before using.
