Is the matte finish truly matte or does it have some degree of sheen?

Can I use mineral spirits to thin for brush application instead of xylene? I read that it's thick and I have mineral spirits on hand.

I used mineral spirits with no problem, dry time was slightly longer but no noticeable issues in my opinion (I am not a professional or the producer)

Has anyone used this on exterior log posts on a log home? Will it peel off later?

I have used this product on a wood cabinet on a boat. I placed 8 coats of this varnish on the cabinet. The varnish is holding up very well. It is not peeling during the last 3 months.

How well would it cover dry oil paint?

I don't know. I think the condition of the paint would matter. Smooth, rough, cracked, peeling. I would contact the manufacturer customer service. I had some questions when doing my project and found them very helpful. I put the varnish on over their marine epoxy, which was over oil paint and had no trouble with it. Again, their customer service is a better source of info.
