I normally wear a Womens 6 1/2 and want a mitten for running in the cold, will these be too large?

Yes, they would be a bit big. However, after saying that, if in really really cold weather (like minus temps) it would offer you extra room for wearing an additional liner glove.

My husband is a X large and there were snug. It is better for a mitts to be a little loose.

Yes, they are, just make sure you get the straps secure to keep water out. The only time I had an issue was having to pull them on and off repeatedly to start, and stop my snowblower. In fact, they are so warm, your hand will likely sweat. Plus the inner lining pulls out and can be washed, or dried if they do get damp. I used them 3-4 hours at a time, and they were great.
