Split n knots

Used for a baby cardigan , pattern say use 4 used 6 Hat said 1 for all sizes used 1 1/2 for middle size Ball not the same yardage as pattern said? Even though suppose to be 50g - dont understand ! Wool tends to split and were lots of knots had to work into pattern. Wool itself lovely and soft knits up lovely Dont think use again as expensive with the amount have to use
