Question 1

yes, that was a huge concern for me also that there is no second escape door, why???

Accepted Answer

There are a lot of feral rescuers who will debate the need for a second “escape” door. A feral cat is always on guard and one exit is enough. 2 would keep them feeling more unsafe as they will be concerned about guarding both doors. I have ferals and shelters with 1 exit and 2. Mine seem to gravitate to the 1 exit shelters so maybe they’re correct in what they say.

Question 2

why is the shipping so expensive

Accepted Answer

Alice,The shipping is priced due to our actual costs to ship the item to our customers. We wish it was lower, but in order to ship The Kitty Tube, it is shipped in a 24" x 24" x 20" box. The top lid is placed underneath to save on the space in the box. The price is based on the dimensional shipping, not the weight. We don't know where you live, Alice, but if you called FedEx, UPS, or the USPS and asked them to give you a quote for their shipping costs from your zip code to our zip code in Hudson, WI - 54016, you will see that the shipping costs are astronomical. We wish our costs were based on the weight and not the dimensional shipping price. If you did the take the time to call either of those providers to get a quote, you will see how much it costs to ship The Kitty Tube. We know it is a lot. We wish we were a larger company and could offer "free" shipping, but at this time, we can't. Someday, we hope. If you would like to contact us via the Amazon contact information, we would be more than happy to answer any other questions you have. Where do you live, Alice? What is your zip code?Warmly,Sarah PetersonSr. Vice President / Co-ownerKitty Tube LLC

Question 3

How does it keep possums or other animals away?

Accepted Answer

I have two feral cats that sleep in my Kitty Tube located on my open porch. Last night, it warmed up into the upper 30's, so the cats we out and about. When I took the dog out, I noticed a possum eating out of the cat dish. When he saw me, he ran into the tube. It was cute too see a possum head sticking out of the tube but I worried it would scare the cats away. By morning, when I checked, the possum was gone and both cats we in the tube. I think opossums and raccoons are more interested in the cat food than they are in the Kitty Tube. From now on, I am going to move the food dish to another location. Anyway, when the temps drop more, the raccoons & opossums will be hibernating.

Question 4

Is there an opening for an electric heater cord?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but it is designed specifically to fit the heating pad/cord manufactured by 'The Kitty Tube' manufacturers. Their heating pad used to be listed through Amazon but is no longer available. You can probably find it on 'The Kitty Tube' website. If not using the opening for the electric cord, The Kitty Tube comes with a plastic plug to close the opening. I found The Kitty Tube to be insulated well enough that I did not need to use an electric heat pad. However, I did find that although The Kitty Tube stayed dry through several heavy rainstorms, I did find recently that some wetness did get into the bottom of it and the bottom of the pillow did get a little bit wet. I do like this pet enclosure and am trying to figure out why it happened. It did not come in through the plugged opening but rather where the bottom seam meets the bottom insulation and I noticed that it happened when it was raining but the temperatures were more colder than 50s and possibly 40s. I don't think that it is condensation and it only happens when it is raining/colder temps, and only where the bottom insulation meets the bottom enclosure. I do like this pet enclosure more than any of the other ones I reviewed and/or purchased so I am trying to resolve it. It may possibly be a sealer that is affected by fluctuating temp changes - not sure - but it is worth resolving because it is a good quality design and product.
