Curious, what's the advantage of these versus the 2071 which is also P95 and doesn't require an adapter?

Depends on the application.  The 2071 are used in a wider variety of applications  I have copied the info from 3M's website:5P71: When properly fitted, use with appropriate cartridges for various applications including spray painting, lacquering, petrochemical and chemical manufacturing, pesticide spraying and agriculture for concentrations up to 10 times the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) with half facepieces or 50 times PEL with full facepieces. Full facepieces must be quantitatively fit tested to claim assigned protection factor above 10 in negative pressure mode. Use with 603 adapter if only particulate protection is required. Do not use in environments that are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).   Recommended Applicationý ý Assembly and Mechanical,ý Cleaning,ý Painting 2071:  Use with 3M Respirators 5000 Series or 3M Cartridge 6000 Series with 3M Adapter 502, or 3M Half and Full Facepieces 6000, 7000 and FF-400 Series with bayonet filter holders. When properly fitted, use in a variety of applications such as grinding, sanding and welding for concentrations up to 10 times the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) with half facepieces or 50 times PEL with full facepieces. Question 3

There are two cartridges on my mask. One on each side. How many filters are you supposed to put in each side? One or two?

Figure #3 in the instructions for my 3M mask shows 1 filter inserted between the cover and the cartridge.   The directions further state the writing should be facing the cartridge leaving a completely white surface facing out to the atmosphere.

Do I need a cartridge for the 6000 particulate series. Is this the best for sawdust?
