“A dynamic story line that grips from the first chapter and doesn't let go.” --Midwest Book Review, Diane Donovan (regarding Once Gone) “A masterpiece of thriller and mystery! The author did a magnificent job developing characters with a psychological side that is so well described that we feel inside their minds, follow their fears and cheer for their success. The plot is very intelligent and will keep you entertained throughout the book. Full of twists, this book will keep you awake until the turn of the last page.” --Books and Movie Reviews, Roberto Mattos (re Once Gone) Women are turning up dead in the rural outskirts of Virginia, killed in grotesque ways, and when the FBI is called in, they are stumped. A serial killer is out there, his frequency increasing, and they know there is only one agent good enough to crack this case: Special Agent Riley Paige. Riley is on paid leave herself, recovering from her encounter with her last serial killer, and, fragile as she is, the FBI is reluctant to tap her brilliant mind. Yet Riley, needing to battle her own demons, comes on board, and her hunt leads her through the disturbing subculture of doll collectors, into the homes of broken families, and into the darkest canals of the killer’s mind. As Riley peels back the layers, she realizes she is up against a killer more twisted than she could have imagined. In a frantic race against time, she finds herself pushed to her limit, her job on the line, her own family in danger, and her fragile psyche collapsing. Yet once Riley Paige takes on a case, she will not quit. It obsesses her, leading her to the darkest corners of her own mind, blurring the lines between hunter and hunted. After a series of unexpected twists, her instincts lead her to a shocking climax that even Riley could not have imagined. A dark psychological thriller with heart-pounding suspense, ONCE GONE marks the debut of a riveting new series—and a beloved new character—that will leave you turning pages late into the night. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one. A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. Wow, a very well written who-dun-it serial killer murder mystery book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great serial killer murder movie, or better yet a mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars. Thank you for the free desertcart Digital Services LLC; book Tony Parsons MSW (Washburn) Review: The best female character I've read all year. - The final line of the Goodreads synopsis states that the reader will be turning the pages "late into the night." That is 100% true, as I can attest. once I picked up this book, I absolutely could not put it down until I got to the last page. It was so compelling, so consuming, I had a need in my bones to know what happened next. The pacing of this story is exquisite. Fast enough that there are no dry portions that are bland to read through, but slow and methodical enough to give the reader ample opportunity to piece together the little foreshadowing tidbits that have been gathered up to any given point. As I read, I was turning the mystery over and over in my mind, looking at the information I had from every angle, trying to figure out how the story would turn out. What I particularly appreciate about Pierce's writing is that the plot is far from mundane or obvious. I never would have imagined what lay behind the gruesome murders of women in this case that pulled Riley Paige back to the FBI. And I tried to guess exactly that! I have always been a fan of such shows as Criminal Minds, and I felt like "Once Gone" read like a particularly detailed and insightful episode of the show. It was fascinating, and a thoroughly heart-pounding read. Riley Paige is what I consider a purely authentic woman. Strong, independent, driven, capable, compassionate in the extreme, but also human, vulnerable, and fallible. She is plagued by self-doubt over her ability to balance being a wife, a mother, and an FBI agent. She is completely relatable, and inspiring. Riley Paige is a woman of inestimable brilliance, and she strikes a chord in the reader as inexplicably being both a bad-ass superhero and an underdog at the same time. The reader knows with absolute certainty that they are rooting for this woman. I know that I, for one, am looking tremendously forward to reading the next installment of Riley Paige's journey.

Riveting!
Right up to the last page. Riley an FBI Agent is the main character. A wonderfully written book, dealing with serial killers. So interesting and exciting. I would give it more stars if I could!

Good Enough
A fairly tight story line with enough action to satisfy me. The FBI agent Riley is a tough and hardened woman with a rough past. She doesn't seem to have any room for love or soft feelings in her life until it dawns on her how miserable she is. She gets her man as we all knew she would but a door for further mayhem remains open. Good read.

A really good read, but....
Overall this was a good book. Well written, and characters pretty well developed. My only issue with the book is Riley, the main character, who is on leave while recovering from being captured and tortured on a previous case where she saved the life of a woman being held captive and was being captured. Riley suffers from recurring bouts of PTSD and is ambivalent as to whether she should be trying to help. So WHY would she put herself in danger of again being captured and tortured by the current serial killer she’s pursuing. She had called for back up. Why didn’t she at least wait until they would be on their way. Instead she goes to the deserted house where he is living and holding his most recent victim and after she realizes its the right house, searches it alone. And gets caught. It is a very exciting ending to the book, which I won’t spoil for anyone. But after she realized it was the right place, she still could have been caught by the sick serial killer while trying to leave to wait for her backup, with the exact same ending. Instead of deliberatly and stupidly placing herself in danger by snooping through the house alone. That’s why I gave it a 4 rather than a 5.

Loved this story
Loved this story! It grabbed me from the first page and carried the thrill through to the end. I have NO idea what some of the negative reviews are about with this book - it was NOT predictable and told a great investigative story about a strong, alpha female FBI agent. I do agree with the other reviews that an FBI agent would have called for backup on ALL of the instances where Reilly went venturing off on her own...especially after being a captive herself. The book tells a good, scary story of something that is believable. The characters in the story are believable, even down to the senator being egotistical, the higher up FBI agent thinking he knows everything and will not admit to being wrong, to the FBI partner and the chaos his life goes through. Anyone who has dealt with police will relate to these characters. I do NOT like spoilers, so i will just say that the book ends with a cliff-hanger for book 2 (just a warning). I am intrigued enough by this book that I will buy book 2 (Once Taken) and will also leave a review for that one as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a good investigative story.

Gripping Start to a Thrilling Series!
Once Gone is a fast-paced, suspenseful mystery that kept me turning pages late into the night. The story follows FBI Special Agent Riley Paige, a complex and determined character who’s trying to get back into the field while recovering from past trauma. When a serial killer begins targeting women in a disturbingly familiar way, Riley is pulled back into action—and into a case that feels eerily personal. Blake Pierce does a great job balancing tension, character development, and plot twists. I especially appreciated Riley’s depth—she’s not just a brilliant agent, but a mother and survivor, which adds emotional layers to the story. The pacing is quick, with short chapters that keep the action moving. While some of the dialogue can feel a little stiff and a few plot points stretch believability, the book delivers what it promises: a thrilling mystery with a strong female lead. Fans of psychological thrillers and crime procedurals will definitely enjoy this one. I’m excited to continue the series and see where Riley’s story goes next!

Excellent
Well written thriller with good storyline and characters. The main character did annoy at times as did things without backup which I feel wouldn't happen in reality. Would like to read the others in the series though

No stopping Riley Paige!
First book by this author and I really enjoyed the thrill of it. Riley is always two steps ahead of others in her quest to find the criminals although her own safety is compromised. I thought her and Bill would get together. Page turner and I would recommend

great suspense
At long last another fictional crime writer worth reading. Could this become the new ‘Scarpetta’ like mysteries? Perhaps we will see in the near future.
