Are aa 12v batteries the normal aa batteries??

Each AA battery (and, in fact, all regular alkaline batteries) are 1.5 volts. The batteries in this case are wired in series according to the product description. When wired in series, you add up the voltage to determine the total voltage. So 8 batteries with 1.5 volts each total 12V. If the were wired in parallel (they aren't) the voltage would be 1.5 volts total but amperage would be greater but the voltage would remain the same.

Is it safe to keep this in the “on” position? The plan is to have the pack connected to a dimmer switch &then to 1ft of LEDs for night changing table

Mine is always on and is attached to a motion senor in my closet. It works great.

Is it a male or female jack? What size?

I believe most people call this type of connector "male" even though there is not 100% standardized terminology. It is a 5.5mm outer diameter and a hole in the middle that is supposed to be 2.1mm but the one I received had a smaller interior hole, less than 2mm, which was too small to fit my device.

Inside (red) should be positive and (black) outside should be negative. Way it's been on all of them I've ordered.
