Cleaner healthier air, while saving money, donโt be affraid to try the Amazon warehouse deal!!
I love a lot about this air filter. I really like the smart features. I originally thought they would be gimmicky, but after living with it for a few weeks I have experienced the value. I love that it detects the airborne contaminants, and increases air circulation to clean the air. Iโve noticed that it increases air flow during high traffic and vacuuming, among other things. I like that I can check the app for air quality, and I can see past air quality as well. I like that the filter knows when itโs bedtime and decreases airflow, in order to keep noise pollution down, for quiet tearfulness. Now on to effectiveness. We have a nearly 3000 square foot new construction home. Itโs about three years old. Most of our air contaminants likely come from area construction, as well as a year round growing season, with year round pollen and similar contaminants. My oldest child has had a persistent hack for the last couple of years. I would not really call it a cough, so much as a hack. Every few minutes he would do a throat and lunch clearing cough. It never seemed short of breath, just seemed to be clearing an irritant. We took him to doctors, who suggested everything from allergies to asthma. We sort of ruled out asthma because he is athletic, and has no issues out working other children, and displays no unacceptable shortness of breath, other than what you expect, and recovery times are quicker than normal. As a previous asthma sufferers myself, that does not resemble asthma to me. We opted to try daily allergy medications, and they seemed to help some, but did not eliminate that dreaded hack. Now I said all of that to say this. Since we added this filter, we hardly ever hear him clear his lungs. Iโm actually surprised, because I assumed it would take much longer. I figured he had been doing it long enough that it was a habit by now. But after a few days of filtering, his symptoms diminished, and after a week or so, he almost never does it. Now our home is nearly double the size of the the filters rated coverage area. But the design of our home, I think, allows one unit to work. Our central air unit has only one air return, and it is at the blower unit. This is located centrally, upstairs, in a closet with a vented door. The area around that closet is sort of an open landing area, that opens to a large family room. I think what is happening is that the filter can clean large volumes of air, that then get circulated through the house. The dirty air is then pushed back up to that open area, and filtered by the unit. The unit can tell when air is clean or dirty, and increases, or decreases circulation, accordingly. Anecdotally this seems to be a successful test, eliminating our primary concern. The side benefit is the remainder of our family is now breathing cleaner, healthier air. It just took one sensitive member to illustrate the need. I wish I had known this would solve the problem, and I wish I had done it sooner. I expected to need to units to have a successful result, and Iโm so pleased that one unit does the job. Not every home may have the same results. Some may actually need two units to do the job. Also, I opted to shop the amazon warehouse deals and save a bunch of money. I bought a used acceptable condition unit. It arrived in a generic box, but everything was still protected by the factory foam, and cling wrap. Everything appeared new, and worked perfectly. If you want to save s big percentage, I highly suggest checking out the warehouse deals. If your displeased with the condition, Amazon has a very generous return exchange policy. My filters in my unit looked brand new and unused. But if I were concerned, new filters are about $100, so you could still have significant savings, even if you opted to put brand new filters in it right away. At first I was put off by what seemed like a high filter cost. Then I recognized what I was spending on allergy medication each month, for one child. The filters provide clean, allergy free air for the whole family, at a fraction of the cost of allergy medications for one child. By reducing our allergy medication costs, we can replace filters as needed, an no added cost. I would have thought building a new home would prevent these issues, but the other new construction in the area, seems to exacerbate the issue. I also weighed the option of an Aprilair, or air bear system on our central air unit, but I was concerned about the designed air flow for our system, and any disruption could shorten the central air life, increase energy needs, and decrease overall home comfort. Those air filters work great for a system designed and tuned for their use. But for a system designed for a more or less open fiber filter, it could cause problems. So I decided a stand alone filter would be the better option. Also those air handler systems that go on your ariconditioner unit, are not usually helps rated. The AIRMEGA 400s is. And it is constantly monitoring, and cleaning the air. It also uses no harmful ozone. Iโm an ozone fan, and I own an ozone generator. But I like to use it in specific situations, under controlled conditions, when all occupants can be out of the house. I donโt want ozone to be a part of my primary home air filtration system. Others may have different priorities, and I encourage you to research the benifits and precautions, and choose according to your needs and priorities.

High quality air filter, highly recommend
This unit seems very accurate. Every time my wife cooks, it kicks into high speed from the smoke. I'm not joking, it actually does. Even if it's just a strong smell from the cooking, it goes into high speed. I even heard it kick in one time after I sneezed. I've already cleaned the outer filter 3 times since purchasing it (about a month now), so it's collecting. And we no longer see the dust floating around when the sunlight shines through the windows in the morning. It's made a big difference. On the cons side, I see no reason for this thing to make a sound when it changes mode. When I configured the auto mode change at night and in the morning, it make a bing-bing sound 3 times in a row about 10 seconds between. It's in our living room, so no big deal, but if you plan to sleep nearby, it would be annoying. Another con, the app is not that great. I had to disable it sending alerts, because the only alert it sends is that your air quality is extremely bad. And it did it so often that I finally disabled it. But then when I opened the app, and viewed the air quality readings, it was never in the extremely bad range, or only hit it once or twice, much less than the numerous notifications. I would recommend going with the non-app version which is significantly cheaper. You won't use the app, unless you forgot to set the mode of the unit before leaving on vacation, but even then, what's the worst that will happen? If no one is in your home, it's unlikely there will be any dust being stirred up anyway, and it will just keep running in the previous mode. The app does show air quality in a graph form, but looking at that wore off after the first couple of days. The build quality is really nice. Heavy strong plastic sidewalls, easy and intuitive filter replacement, and it's very quiet for the amount of air it appears to be moving. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the quality!

Great Industrial Grade Filter โBut Is The App Spyware?
The filter itself has provided phenomenal filtration for approx. 600 sq ft space. The circular LED particle display is very sensitive to report dust or humidity passing inside the sensor with different colors. The filters themselves are obviously made with the highest quality, and are multi-stage and readily suck up smoke, most smells and dust. The circular indicator goes yellow or red when it detects particles and gradually absorbs the particulates until the indicators returns to the reassuring "blue-green" color. I bought this to combat smells migrating from a neighbor in the unit below. It does a valiant job. The neighbor is a formidable foe, however. So I don't fault the unit. The filters are quite expensive. The filter has last months so far, and the LED filter life indicator suggests it is half expended. I have cleaned the fine metal screens, running them under water to rinse off dust rather than letting it go airborne again. The clean-the-metal-screen indicator activates pretty oftenโabout once a weekโwhich is more than I would expect. It is not a big chore, but I didn't know I would have a job to do to maintain the filter, albeit minor. Air quality has been good, so worth it. The activated charcoal elements do work, however, with the challenging smells from below (cooking? smoking? who knows?) I do use Febreeze spray from time to time to freshen things up and quickly bump things up to a fresher level inside. I thought the unit would be too big for the space, but with the neighbor issue, it has proved to be right-sized to the task. I usually run it on level 3 while at home, which has an acceptable sound level and also creates a smooth white noise to filter out some of the neighbor's odd noises as well. But when I leave, I boost it to 4 to catch any violations while I'm gone, so the air is fresh when I come back. The highest setting is quite loud, but if you want clean air "now" it is nice having the extra horsepower when needed. When absent, I'll use 4 to guarantee things are clean. Over the winter, wood smoke from outside would settle at ground level with atmospheric inversions pretty often. It was really nice to have "clean room" of air and a reprieve from the smokey outside air. Annual forest fires that come every summer summer will give this filter a workout, too, but I'd expect it to do well. I would recommend the filter. However, I took one star off for the app. I was very uncomfortable with the language I found on end user license agreement (EULA) which seems to grant broad-brush license to this Chinese company to use your information any way it wants, or give it to anyone it wants. With such a customer-unfriendly EULA, it caused me to wonder what unadvertised "features" this unit might have. Why does it need so much access? But more importantly, I'm not sure what data you must "OK" when installing and using the app on your phone. Is this spyware? Does it slurp up your contacts and other personal info and send it back to the mothership? The EULA created just enough doubt that even though I have the WIFI model, I decided NOT to use the smart app features from my phone and not to install the app, which has been fine. However, I paid extra to have this feature and was a bit disappointed by the level of intrusion the app wanted and Coway's invasion of privacy. I leave the filter running 24/7 anyway, so the app really isn't all that necessary. The circular LED status display gives sufficient feedback to make occasional adjustments when needed, so changing settings isn't often enough to need a phone app anyway. Overall, I would recommend the unit, but not the WIFI version. The prices rose immediately after I ordered the WIFI model, such that the higher price for the non-WIFI unit made it the same price as what I paid for the WIFI versionโso I just kept it. (The price has gone up 50% since I purchased, so I'd suggest watching for sales. I would not have purchased this at the current price.) I tried an assortment of different filters prior to buying this one to combat the inside air problems with the neighbor. This is the only one that had enough oomph to truly make a difference. This unit would be great for apartments or condos with shared walls or floors where you may not have full control over neighbor activities. A miscellaneous comment. The bright circular LED status light can be turned off at night. It also serves as a fairly bright night light if left on in living spaces at night. I suspect the app can control this, too, but I've opted to do it manually. I will have to consider whether I'll get the genuine Coway filters (yes, there are two large filter panels inside with a massive filter area) which are quite expensive, or one of the seemingly identical no-name filters at half the price. The reviews suggest the knock-offs may work as well. I'd be willing to try them.

Great Air Purifier - 3 Year Review
Iโve been using the Airmega 400s for over three years, and it has been outstanding. Weโve noticed a significant reduction in both household dust and allergy symptoms. The unit is extremely sensitive to airborne particles and almost instantly detects and alerts me when air quality changes, even on other floors. While the filters do need to be replaced eventually, they can be thoroughly cleaned and reused several times before replacement is truly necessary. The Airmega 400s is very quiet in most modes, and even at full power itโs not disruptive at all. I consistently recommend this air purifier to friends and family.

Worth It!
This is a great air purifier! Been using it for about a month now and no issues at all. Wi-Fi is solid if you have great connection. I have an Orbi Mesh system so I never have an issue with connectivity. Alexa voice command works fine, but limited to Power and Fan Speed. You canโt ask Alexa for air quality status or what current unit mode is. App works great. Will notify you if air quality changes. You can control the unit with the app, check filter status, and also set schedules if you want. Level 1 is practically silent. Level 2 is louder, but doesnโt interfere with being able to hear things. Level 3 is pretty loud. Sensor works fine. If it detects unhealthy air (cooking, candles, pets) it kicks up to Level 3 right away and gradually goes down as air improves. You can adjust sensor sensitivity through the app. Pre Filter must be washed around 2-3 weeks. Main filters are rated to last 1 year, but I canโt attest to that yet. After 1 month, my main filters are down to 88%. Make sure the left and right sides of the unit are not being blocked and do not put it against the wall or furnitures. These two sides are where the dirty air is sucked in and clean air returns from the top so donโt put anything on top of the unit either. If the sides are blocked, the unit will not run efficiently so try your best to place them free of all obstruction. You can put the back of the unit against the wall, just not the sides. My only other advise after doing some major research on air purifiers and getting the most benefit out of one is to leave it running 24/7 without depending on Smart Mode. This is the only way you can guarantee clean/fresh air because it will never enter Sleep Mode and wait for a trigger. I leave mine on Level 2 from 7am until 2am. Then I have it run on Level 3 from 2am until 7am when weโre all asleep upstairs in the 2nd Floor so we donโt even hear it. Yes my pre filters get dirtier faster, but thatโs the point right? To eliminate air impurities as much as possible. One last thing. The circle lights of the filter status indicator on the unit decreases as the filter gets down in increments of 20%. So at 80%, 1/5 of the circle is off and half the circle is off at 50%. Some think this is the LED dying already. It is not. Itโs actually a feature so you can quickly see directly on the unit if the filter needs cleaning/replacing. The light completely turns off when itโs down to 0% and the word โClean/Replaceโ turns red. Once you clean/replace the filter, you can reset it and the entire button illuminates again by holding it for 3 seconds. I think that covers it all pretty much.

S version of the purifier does not work with the app - it has been broken for 4 months
Update 2018-09-18: A warning to all customer thinking about purchasing the "S" version. The app that controls the air purifier has not been working for over four (4!) months. This means that the "S" device is not a smart air-purifier, but rather quite dumb. I urge you to read reviews for their companion app called "Coway IoCare" in the Apple App Store. No one is happy and the company (Coway) is ignoring its customers. When Coway does reply, they copy/paste one of two responses which is painful. Update 2018-06-12: The company decided to get rid of the dedicated app for the AirMega and to use an inferior mostly Korean-language app called "Coway IOCare". It is extremely buggy, doesn't link your previous AirMega account, performs updates without your consent, the error messages are partially in Korean with serious spelling mistakes, I still haven't been able to login to this poorly-written app because it keeps crashing before I login. So by deciding to prematurely eliminate a perfectly fine working app, the company behind AirMega decided to render my smart purifier quite useless. Why would they do this?? ... after spending an hour or so trying multiple combinations to get the AirMega paired with my app (delete app, restart app, re-register the AirMega), I finally succeeded only to learn that the scheduling is no longer available for the 400S which is one of the major selling points. So at this point Amazon should step in to pull this device off their marketplace because there's false advertising about the ability to schedule the device. Currently, with the new Coway IOCare app, it is not possible to schedule the device to turn on/off. Update 2018-03-22: The app has been updated to allow scheduling with the status/display light on or off, this is a HUGE and WELCOMED update. We no longer need to put tape over the light while the device is cleaning our air in the middle of the night! Thank you! Update 2017-03-24: since they fixed the iPhone app (which occurred quickly after the complaints rolled in), the devices have been functioning quite well. Filter cleaning is quite simple. There are some bugs, such as pre-filter alerting sends your phone 1 message every few minutes until you actually reset the filter. The BIGGEST detractor is the display light on the front of the AirMega (as mentioned below) -- it is far too bright and really annoying for the bedroom because it lights up the entire room. It's very unfortunate that they haven't fixed this issue. --- Update 2016-11-07: iPhone app (on iOS 10 device) is no longer responsive. What this means is that it I am no longer able to control/configure my purifiers. There appear to be similar complaints about the AirMega iPhone app not functioning on Apple App Store. I really hope that they continue to develop new features and to support this product. If they stop supporting the app, then we've all got a pricey white spongebob-like looking device the can't be scheduled at all and must operate in "SmartMode" all the time. Ideally, it would be nice if consumers could connect to the device directly rather than go through Coway servers (which may or may not be up and available). --- Review after purchasing the device: Overall, this is a high quality product with great attention to detail. Initially I was disappointed to see that it was WHITE (the photos suggested to me that it was stainless steel), but that disappointment was soon purified away. The device comes with two very thick filters and a pre-filter which catches the big stuff. The smartphone set up was quite simple however the utility I get from the smartphone app is a little weak; hope it improves. Many people purchase devices like this exclusively because of the design and whether it works or not is of no matter to them. I purchased this device because I really need clean air in my house and I wanted something that I could connect to with my iPhone. People usually read reviews to see "what's wrong with the product"... so let me provide some insight: - Instruction manual doesn't do a great job describing the features (nor does the FAQ online), especially in the context of the scheduling functionality as it relates to the features on the 400S (schedule+smart mode, schedule+manual mode, schedule+melody/light)). - Additionally, there's no visibility in the app when a user-defined schedule is executing; this would be nice right? An app is meant to provide status updates. - When accessing the indoor air quality graph, the app takes at least 30s to load the data (which in my case is nothing at this time because I just bought these devices) - hopefully this section improves from a latency perspective. - Light & noise and auto-on. I've noticed that the device does turn on and off automatically (smart mode), but when it does, it plays a melody which is *not* great when placed in a bedroom. That chime will wake you up. The indicator light which shows the pollution level is quite bright in a dark room, for some reason it turns on when the machine auto-starts (even though I disabled it on the machine itself). There is no volume control for said melody. - When the purifier goes into ECO mode, you are unable to access any information about the device through the app. You must first turn the device on in order to see any details, i.e., scheduling or filter status. - The definition of the Smart Mode Sensitivity settings is not well defined. - Security: given that this is a "connected" device, there is little information on security. My usage: - I bought two 400S purifiers; one for our main level and one for the master bedroom. Bottom line, this is a great little machine, you won't be very disappointed; maybe just a little with the items described above. IMO, the price is a little high ($200 too much), but I managed to get one during the Prime Day sale ($100 off).

Really improved the air quality
Before we purchased the air purifier, we had to dust almost every day. Now it is about once a week so the unit is definitely taking the dust and dander particles out of the air. It works on the Smart mode, so we never have to adjust anything or worry about it working as it is needed. We have this on the main floor of a 2-floor house. The main floor is about 1,000 sq. feet in an open arrangement of Kitchen, den living room and it does a great job in that amount of space. The filter requires cleaning about every 4 weeks or so, but it will alert you when it needs to be cleaned with a vacuum. The main filter lasts approximately one year and Amazon offers a 2-pack generic replacement that is about forty five dollars for a 2-pack. The app that comes with it is very unreliable and really doesn't do anything useful at all except alert you when the air quality is poor and when the filter needs to be cleaned/replaced. If you lose wifi and the purifier has to be manually reset to restore the wifi, then it will automatically start the "alert" times for filter cleaning and replacement to zero, so it is not measuring anything but a set the time until cleaning or replacement is needed rather than measuring the condition of the filters. Overall, it has done a great job for us and I do recommend it, especially if you have indoor pets (we have a couple of dogs and a cat) to keep down the pet dander. It does a really good job of filtering the air.

A fantastic product from a company that seems to be trying to make it terrible
The Airmega 400s is a fantastic project with frustrating quirks. I have terrible seasonal allergies and have owned many different HEPA filters. This one is easily the very best I've ever owned. In "smart" mode and at it's lowest setting it's practically silent and able to maintain decent indoor air quality. The ability to schedule this is a life-changer. I have it run on high in the livingroom for an hour both before I wake up and when I come home from work. At night I have it scheduled to turn its lights off. The build quality of the machine is phenomenal and people who come to visit comment on how fresh the air feels in my home. There are however a few extremely negative aspects of the machine that keep it from being perfect. Fortunately none of them are related to the filtering quality. The first is the mobile app. It's easily the worst mobile application ever written and Coway should be seriously ashamed of it. Setup is a nightmare that took 10 error filled attempts to get working on my 2.4g network (the device does not support 5). Once setup the app is slow and clunky to use. Expect to be randomly logged out and to experience a myriad of mysterious errors. Once you get the schedule setup you can thankfully forget about using it. As long as you have a WiFi connection the device will keep running at the programmed times. Interestingly as of iOS 12.4 the mobile app just flat-out won't let you use it, instead displaying an error that the current version of iOS is not supported. Hopefully Coway is still in business and can at least get the app working again? I've not used the Alexa or Google Assistant integrations but IFTTT support would be a dream. The second issue is relatively minor and related to the buttons. While you can toggle and schedule the main light on the front of the machine you can't turn off the button lights. This is annoying if you plan on sleeping in the same room as the device. I personally solved it by putting black gaffer tape over the button lights. You can still press the buttons and they don't shine blindingly at night. Another issue is there is no child lock for the buttons. I've never been able to use the automatic filter replacement feature because my cat walks on the machine and holds down the filter reset button. It would be nice if there was a lock feature or something to keep accidental presses from doing anything crazy. It might sound like I hate this machine but I honestly love it to death. I hope Coway eventually fixes their app and improves the product over time. I recently got a Airmega 300 for another room and regret not getting another 400s as it's a far superior machine. Don't let all the negative reviews for the 400s discourage you from getting it though, it's really the best HEPA filter money can buy and once you get the schedule setup you won't have to stress about the terrible app too much.

Great air purifier!
Great product , I've been using the air mega 400S for about a month now . It moves a lot of air quickly. and my allergies are much better . The auto setting works perfect also the phone app is cool and works good although the outside allergy update for my area on the app does not work , it say's not supported in my area , not a deal breaker for me , I live on Vancouver island. Very powerful unit . I was more interested in power and the ability to clean a lot of air as I live in a 1600 square foot house but am pleasantly surprised in the refinement and build quality . At full speed it isn't to loud , usually it comes on and only needs to go to medium speed to get the job done and is very quiet . At low speed and sleep mode you cant even hear it . The house smells fresher and I am breathing better now . I bought another one for a friends place yesterday as she suffers with allergy's also. Over all very happy , Everything is better than I expected !

Excellent air purifier
I did a lot of research on air purifiers before settling on this one (400S). After purchasing it I have to say I'm extremely impressed. Build quality is fantastic, it moves a lot of air through it, on the low settings it's super quiet (and still move good air). I was able to connect it to my AmpliFi mesh network no problem, I didn't have any of the connection issues others have experienced. The scheduling works very well. There's a very small bug in the scheduling if you are trying to do things specific (too long to go into it in the review). But I have been in contact with Coway and they are working on the fix right now. Their customer support is amazing, fast replies and very friendly. The sensor works great. The 1st one we got is in the Master bedroom, so once we start making the bed in the morning it will sense the "dust" coming off the bed and will kick into medium speed. Even just moving around it will sometime kick it into medium because you are kicking up dust from the carpet (which can hold a lot of dust). So it knows when the air isn't 100% perfect. We liked it so much that we purchased a 2nd 400S for our Living Room/Kitchen (open concept house), we have 2 indoor cats (that don't go into the bedrooms). And a 3rd (300S) for the basement to go beside the cat litter box. We went with a 300S for the basement because of the light sensor on the 400S (300S has no light sensor), it's dark in the basement and the 400S would stay in Sleep mode all the time, which is not what we want, we want SMART mode all the time in the basement. I believe Coway is also working on the ability to disable the light sensor on the 400S through the app, but it's not available yet so we went for the 300S. I don't use the light sensors on the 400S either, I have the schedule turn them completely off during the night because in sleep mode they move a tiny amount of air (to be extremely quiet), not enough to really do a lot in our house, so there's no reason to keep them on. If you have really bad air it's probably good to have them keep working even at a reduced capacity, but our air is pretty good, I just wanted them to help with some of the dust and also a way to monitor my indoor air (through their app). Very happy with them so far.
