I purchased the same board in a smaller size in December and was so impressed by it, I purchased this larger size to keep out on the coffee table. The board is solid, heavy weight, ornate and beautifully crafted. The pieces are resin, sturdy, have a nice weight and are detailed. The board arrived in one piece and the playing pieces are secure within their respective drawers. The board and playing surface are NOT square. So, if you questioned whether the dimensions in the description for this product were correct, they essentially are. The board measured approximately 14 7/8" x 13 3/4" x 3 1/8". Each checkered square of the playing surface measures approximately 1 1/4" x 1 3/16". The bases of the playing pieces vary and are approximately 3/4" square on the Pawns & Bishops and 7/8" square on the Rooks, Knights, King & Queen. The Pawns are approx. 1 7/8" tall, the Rooks & Knights 2" tall, the Bishops & Queen are approx. 2 1/4" tall while the King is approx. 2 7/16" tall. Overall this chess set is far more beautiful than my expectations & beyond compare. I also placed a separate order for wooden Checkers playing pieces as can be seen in the posted photos. They are 1.06" diameter and fit this board perfectly!

This was a birthday gift for my eleven year old grandson, to replace his beginner set with arrows and cheat cards. He thinks this is the coolest chess set ever! Unfortunately, neither of his parents play chess, so My son and I are the only ones who are worthy adversaries to him. I picked up jade chess pieces for my son when we were in China several years ago and made a Board from cut marble. We now have two Chinese themed sets in the family! You cannot even tell this board is cardboard, everything is very square and even. My son offered to glaze it with some lacquer to prevent any sort of moisture or water damage, but I am not sure that is necessary. The pieces are great quality, and the storage drawers are a bonus.

I bought the 15.7x15.7 set. I do really love the set but gave it only 4 instead of 5 stars due to just a few small issues. The biggest issue for me is that the bishops and queens are the same height and the queen's don't have anything that makes them stand apart easily from the bishops. My white queen happens to also be shorter than the bishops and other queen. If they did not want the queens to be naturally taller than the bishops they could of added overall height to the pieces by placing the queens on higher bases or having them wear large crowns or having chopsticks sticking out of their hair or having them hold up a fan. Preferably one of the last 3 options, giving the queens a noticeable distinction between the bishops from the top. The second smaller issue is that with the detailing on the board and the way it is divided in half makes it so you play with the bottom right hand corner being a black square instead of the usual white or in this case red square which might throw some chess players off. And my last small issue is just a mild aesthetic one. Its a beautiful black and red chessboard and the white pieces look great on the board but the dark pieces are a dark reddish brown, like a dark maroon and they just clash with the red on the board a bit. I think I might spray paint mine black and add some gold, bronze or red detailing. And to get my queens to stand out from the bishops a bit I have added height by attaching a magnet base to them for now. I might also dab a little paint for contrast on their heads. But other than all these small issues for the price range of $50-$60 it is a really nice set.

I wanted a very unique chess set, and my home decor is all Asian! This set is so beautiful & unique, it is well built & has little secret drawers to store the chess pieces. It is the most beautiful chess set I have ever seen!! Very much, well worth the money! I feel like I have a treasure, allowed for me to own by craftsman’s skills, I am honored to own this set!! Everytime I play chess, the set makes me smile, even if I lose sometimes!😎 this was a gift to myself, I am 64 years old, that is why I can appreciate it so much!!

Well worth the price. The pieces were surprisingly high quality. The box is nice. The board is the weakest part. To improve: add felt to the bottom of the pieces, antique the dark brown pieces with flat black paint (apply and rub off), make new surface to the board with finish grade plywood. That said, as is, this product is worth much more than what was paid for it.

My son loves chess and this set is not just hood looking it's portable and good quality. I hate the handles and will probably switch them out at some point but otherwise this is a nice set.

I’m not sure how long it will last, but it sure is beautiful and fun to look at while we play at home!

A fantastic Christmas gift for my mum! This set combines two of my mother's great loves, chess and the terracotta warriors of China. Where this set really stands out is the pleasing aesthetic of the this set. The units look good and are very well detailed, plus the board is amazing and looks much better than I imagined it to be going by the pictures on Amazon. The artwork and colours are truly beautiful and look professionally done. This is not a tacky looking piece that you have to hide away in a draw somewhere, this actually looks good displayed in a living room. It is quite a heavy board and seems to be well built. The size is a good size to (I made sure not to buy a chess set too small). The pieces all well detailed and are made out of resin I believe (personally I love marble, but on a positive note marble can break easily if dropped or mishandled and so resin is great for longevity and toughness). The units all fit nice and snug inside two special compartments within the board itself which I love. Of course often with custom chess sets the pieces can be a little harder to tell apart from each other, but this is not really a problem once you learn to identify the pieces from each-other, also you can always use more generic chess pieces if you so desire. I am a bit of a perfectionist with gift giving and after spending over half a day and looking through countless websites I am very happy with the choice I made in the end (P.S So is my mum : ) (Overall: Better than expected and I feel like I made the right decision)

It is the perfect gift for a man for a father or a son

I am Avid Chess Player, and I was looking for a Chess Set that would be a Focal Point in my Lounge. I've been looking for this Style and Look for some time. Similar Chess Set were TOO SMALL; I didn't want that, so I eventually Stopped Looking. When I came across this Chess Set, and at the PERFECT SIZE, I was More Than Happy. I was OVER THE MOON. The Detail on the Chinese Characters were "SPOT ON". The Size of the Pieces on the Board are Just Right. Moving them around the Board are Good as you are not Knocking Over other pieces due to being too small. The Detail and Construction of the Chess Set in itself, is EXCELLENT. If you wanted to Store Away the individual pieces, you can, as there's individual slots for the pieces. This 15in x 13.8in Chess Set is PERFECT. Perfect for Me. If you Love the Oriental Look, then You won't be Disappointed. The Finish in Detail and Quality means; this Chess Set will be Handed Down to the Next Generation; that's if my Children become Lovers of Chess. I give this a 10/10 Two Thumbs Up. And YES, I do have a FOCAL POINT in my Lounge.
