Princess Hyacinth (The Surprising Tale of a Girl Who Floated)

Great Conversation Starter!
There’s a lot to like in this story. When Princess Hyacinth is confronted with the ultimate worst thing that could happen - being airborne, she finds that she has the skills to handle it and that she can trust herself to handle a scary situation. Also, her chronic floating isn’t portrayed as good or bad - it’s just something that is part of Hyacinth that she has to make some adjustments to her life to accommodate. This book can spark some great conversations with kids.

For a little Princess
Last time I saw my good friend she was telling me, a little despairingly, about how her 5 year old daughter is really into the princess thing lately, despite her mom never really exposing her to all the pink nonsense that whole theme can quickly elevate to. So when her birthday came around a couple months ago (I always send her books every year) I thought I'd look for an unconventional book about a princess. This one had great reviews and was a hit with Mia because of the princess AND with her mom because of the empowering story and non-over-the-top usual princess hoopla.

fun to read; beautiful to look at
Like other Lane Smith books this one is quirky and beautifully illustrated. The layout is also fun (designed by Lane Smith's wife). The reading on each page is short - good for children with short attention spans and adults who don't want dry mouth after reading.Smith seems to love being involved in slightly off-kilter stories (as those familiar with his collaborations with Jon Scieska i.e. "The Stinky Cheese Man" will know). This book continues in that vein:Princess Hyacinth floats and there's nothing to be done about it; she is incredibly bored/lonely. One day she ends up floating outside. Just when it looks as though she will float completely away she's tangled in a kite string and a friendship is born.I highly recommend this book for little girls who love princesses and adults who are tired of them.

We love Princess Hyacinth.
One of my 4yo daughter's favorites. After getting it out of the library, we had to get our own copy. Fun story for parent and child. Adorable illustrations.

An Instant Favorite
Both our son and daughter love this book and request it frequently. Even though she is "rescued" by a boy, it's still nice turn on the helpless princess story. Princess Hyacinth is spunky, fearless and daring. Illustrations are lovely and humorous. It's one I don't mind reading aloud over, and over, and over ...

Fun and different children’s adventure storybook
This is a fantastic children’s story book, excellent illustrations and a very unusual story about finding friends. Enduring Friendship is at the core of the story.

Book arrived damaged
The book is fine. However it arrived bent in half and the front cover is creased so bad from being folded in half Unfortunately I need this book for the classroom this week so returning it isn't an option. Such a shame to get a new book, spend money on it and have it in poor condition. I have had it pressed between two heavy objects in hopes of it straightening out.
