Q: Last time I bought these the red ink had been downgraded to a lighter poor-flowing shade. Are they back to the original red?

I had the same problem with the red ink running out the fastest on the multicolor pen. I finally bought a 12 pack of red BIC pens on Amazon for $1.79. (That's the total for ALL 12 pens.) I used the first one 5 days a week at work, several times a day, and it lasted me almost a year. I still have most of the rest. Q: The red has changed- less ink and lighter

The ink has changed color over the years, but I have used these since about 1971. I hadn't noticed any particular change in the amount of ink of any particular color. It could just be a bad batch of red ink.

Q: How do you refill the lead

TO refill the lead you simply twist the barrel to open it. Remove the metal piece on the lead tube. Insert no more than 2 leads and reassemble. I hope this is helpful. The BIC Team - The Official BIC Store
