We have a weird diagonal/45 degree wall surface in our apartment that this gate would go on. Has anyone used this on similar angles with success?

We have the same problem. We used a wooden wedge on all four contact points on the wall. We painted the wedges the same color as the wall. Works & not terribly noticeable.

Can it be installed if you have trim and quarter riund at the bottom?

You need about an inch of level wall surface

our space is exactly 58in wide - will the tension be strong enough to hold at that max length?

It’s not super strong. My husband put a screw into bottom of the gate straight into the floor to add stability. A shim of some sort would also work. We leave our gate up all the of the time so don’t mind having a screw there. This gate is adequate but not heavy duty, in my opinion.
