why does the description state the standard spacing of 2.54mm/0.1" while the illustrations specify the non-standard 2.5mm/0.09"?

The ones I got were 0.1-in (2,.54mm)

Are the square or round female connector?

All connector shells are rectangular. Within each rectangular connector shell, the individual female connectors themselves are designed [shaped] to receive mating square header pins. The solder-tail ends of the female connectors are flat.

What size wire can be used with these ? will they work with 20 gage?

The solder tabs on these headers are intended to be soldered to a PCB -- for PCB to PCB connections. I suppose you could try to solder individual wires to individual tabs [then heat-shrink the joints], but you'd probably risk melting the plastic housings. Plus, your 20ga wire suggests current requirements that might exceed the ratings for these pins. If I were you, I'd look elsewhere for alternatives.

Does this include any 1x4 female headers? the description says it does under "number of pins" but under "package details" it does not list it.

Yes, a couple of them, what you see in the first picture is the different connectors that come in the package
