what is the warranty? Is there any protection for static discharge or nearby lightning?

There is no warranty paperwork provided by the manufacturer. In the box is a simple kounting diagram and hardware. However I have had multiple units installed in indoor and outdoor scenarios and haven't had any problems. I am sure Amazon would cover the replacement if it were in the first 30days.
