The Ultimate Fake Book (for C Instruments)

I bought the digital version of this fake book and love it. I own a number of paper fake books and have always enjoyed the ease of playing songs without turning pages. This is the first fake book I've owned that actually has some songs that require a page turn, but there aren't too many, so it's okay. Having 1,200 songs living on my tablet is a huge advantage over the cumbersome books.Great selection of songs dating back to the turn of the 20th Century and up to about the 70s or 80s. I'm an old guy, so the older stuff appeals to me the most. It covers most of the old standards along with some more obscure numbers.The only grumble I have about the digital version is about the difficulty of tracking down a particular number in a hurry. E-readers are not really equipped for this kind of thing. There is a clickable index, but it's huge (1,200 songs, duh!) and the word search takes you to the non-clickable index, which isn't much help because you still have to get to the actual page manually. I get around this by highlighting the names of the songs I like and then using the highlight page as an index. Works okay.Great selection of music!

When I first posted this list on September 25, 2004, I got the Table of Contents from the Hal Leonard Web site, but I did not know that they would publish later editions while apparently using the same ISBN number! The songs listed now at the H.L. site DIFFER from this list here. But I am leaving this list as a reference to the edition listed there when I first posted here.2014 Update: The Hal Leonard site shows a 5th Edition. The book is great, the binding adequate. There are nearly 800 pages in a large plastic comb. Whoever ships these in the future need to understand that when you put a HEAVY plastic combed book, with that many pages, in a box large enough it can rattle around freely in transit, without any cushioning at all, it's going to get beat up and damaged. The cover was slightly bent up on the corners and the last 100 pages separated from the comb. Covers on these books get beat up in use anyhow and I can take this to a place with a comb machine to have it reassembled, maybe with a better comb, but for the price one pays it should have arrived to me intact. Not going to bother to ship it back though and have another shipped since I can fix this for a small cost. Happy with the book, found a few small errors already in the music but pretty easy to figure out the right note so not a problem. Not too happy with the Amazon packaging.

The book is in like-new condition and arrived fairly quickly. Great deal.

This book is HUGE, much bigger than I expected or needed. Having said that, it has a wide variety of songs and there 2 tables of content - one alphabetical and the other by music category. I found that very helpful. I purchased a used one with no markings so I saved a little money. But I agree with other reviews - the print is small and difficult to read at times but for my purposes it will do.

This is really a 4 1/2 star book. The very qualities that it HAS also hampers it. It is HUGE and has literally something for everyone in it. The BIGGEST problem with the book is that the print is very small. By having small print, it allows sometimes two songs to a page. Good thing it comes wirey binder, otherwise it is SO big it would be totally unwieldy. All the songs are NOT in the key of C, if that's what you're looking for. When I got the book in the mail, I immediately found at least 30 favorites of mine that I marked that I could easily play. There is great music in this book. I researched the "Reviews" before I bought this and I have to say, that they were Spot-On with their reviews. Make sure you wear magnifiers when you sit down with this book. I would definitely recommend this book. While I'm at it with this review,......the very BEST book I've bought was the 1960's Fake Book. Phenomenal music (all in C)
