So they would fit next to the ear to protect from any discomfort. Open the earring and put the smaller tab part (little ball) of the tabs from inside thru the back triangle shape. Then the bigger pad part of the pad will fit right next to the back of the ear

Are these hypoallergenic?

No info on that for this clip on style, but they do have small rubber/plastic pieces that are an option to cushion the ear.
