Before buying this, I did a lot of research on what the five spices in five spice powder should be. This one appeared to be the most authentic, with nothing else added and all five included: star anise, fennel seeds, cinnamon, cloves and Szechuan peppercorns. It is a small amount, 2.4 oz. for $10.95, but you don't use it every day and you don't use a lot. It has a very distinctive and unique taste. I made a five spice beef stew, and it was to die for. For comparison's sake, I bought a less expensive version of five spice powder, 3.5 oz. for $4.47. I compared them both. The less expensive one had an added ingredient, dextrose, and no pepper (the fifth flavor) and was partially produced with genetic engineering, yet neither the color nor the pungent fragrance were as intense. For authentic cooking, I preferred USimplySeason Asian Seasoning Chinese Five Spice Powder. If I ever use it up, this is the one I'll buy again.

I am a self-trained chef. Recently I found an ancient Mandarin cook book, a jewel! I decided to buy the best products possible and ordered this product. Well, as soon as I opened it up I smelled the scent of gorgeous spices filling my lungs and my heart with joy. As I began to cook, the Chinese Five Spice Blend worked perfectly and my dish tasted heavenly. I am definitely would buy this product again. In comparison to what I saw and smelled in my local market, this product is high quality and worth the price - looking forward to more cook more USimplySeason Chinese Five Spice Blend wonderful dishes.

This is such an amazing spice mix. It has great flavor and adds so much depth to your dishes. It truly is a spice I can use for many recipes, sweet or savory. A little goes a long way so you can get many uses with this jar!

I wanted a five spice mix that was just right, and I think this is it. The anise isn't too strong, neither is the cinamon or the clove. And better yet, it uses real szechuan peppercorn. This makes the five spice far more versatile. Black peppercorns have pepperine which inhibits enyzmes your liver uses. This can cause some problems, and later how food affects oneself. By having a balacned five spice flavor, and using szechuan peppercorns (as it's supposed to for 'real' five spice) this allowed this mix to be used not just standalone, but also added to other dishes and spice mixes. So when I want a hint of fennel and clove, but don't want it strong, I have this five spice. It can be hard to avoid using too much of either when adding them. Sometimes when mixing spices you add too much clove, or cinnamon, etc. With this already mixed and well-balanced, it's much easier to avoid that mistakes. And by itself, this is a very tasty spice mix. Which is what I hoped for after searching so extensively for the 'right' one.

I decided to make my own Char Siu for my Pork Fried Rice. It tasted authentic and a definite repeat. I was taken aback with the strong cinnamon smell, but when mixed with the other ingredients in the marinade it was perfect. This was my first purchase of a Chinese Five Spice and read plenty of reviews for them. This has the Szechuan peppercorns which was what I wanted.

i never bought a 5 spice on Amazon but tried to find it in the stores. Didn't like any of them so i made my own. Im very particular about things and this is the first 5 spice i purchased online...from Amazon, after reading the reviews..... and i am soooooooo glad that i did. when i received it, i opened it n sniffed it and i said.... Bammmm!!! this is it. Not too much cinnamon, Not too weak ...., has enough Sichuan Peppercorn....Love it !!!!!!

Not too shabby but used to be better. The mix has been altered and not for the better.

Spice smells perfect. The last time I ordered Chinese Five Spice they used the wrong type of Anise or something and it smelled really wrong, like pumpkin pie spice mixed with black licorice. This is the right stuff. If you wanted a container as pictured though, you might not get one. I didn't get a tall container but that isn't making a difference in my cupboard. Still 5 stars.
