Modern cars are more computerized than ever. Infotainment and navigation systems, Wi-Fi, automatic software updates, and other innovations aim to make driving more convenient. But vehicle technologies haven’t kept pace with today’s more hostile security environment, leaving millions vulnerable to attack. The Car Hacker’s Handbook will give you a deeper understanding of the computer systems and embedded software in modern vehicles. It begins by examining vulnerabilities and providing detailed explanations of communications over the CAN bus and between devices and systems. Then, once you have an understanding of a vehicle’s communication network, you’ll learn how to intercept data and perform specific hacks to track vehicles, unlock doors, glitch engines, flood communication, and more. With a focus on low-cost, open source hacking tools such as Metasploit, Wireshark, Kayak, can-utils, and ChipWhisperer, The Car Hacker’s Handbook will show you how to: –Build an accurate threat model for your vehicle –Reverse engineer the CAN bus to fake engine signals –Exploit vulnerabilities in diagnostic and data-logging systems –Hack the ECU and other firmware and embedded systems –Feed exploits through infotainment and vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems –Override factory settings with performance-tuning techniques –Build physical and virtual test benches to try out exploits safely If you’re curious about automotive security and have the urge to hack a two-ton computer, make The Car Hacker’s Handbook your first stop. Review: Well written, well organized, "Hacking Exposed" of the automotive industry.... - This book is intended for the advanced security researcher. It assumes a good working knowledge of *nix/*bsd, compiling from source code, using github, knowing how to chase down dependencies, etc. Having said that: The author knows his stuff and has clearly worked with the substantive content on a regular basis. It really is the "Hacking Exposed" of automotive CAN buses, and that's a compliment I don't give lightly. For the advanced security researcher, this book should really be on one's shelf. It does an excellent job of introducing one to the necessary hardware and software needed to begin playing with Controller Area Networks (CAN buses) used in the automotive industry. About the only thing I think the book is missing when compared to other available material is a more detailed discussion of the Toyota-specific Checksums as well as a bit more discussion on hardware and cabling (there are some issues with some cables using DB pins 7/2 for CAN high/low and most other cables using DB pins 3/5 for CAN high/low). Playing with CAN buses is definitely not for the faint of heart. One should have a passion for automobiles, a passion for solving complex problems, as well as a passion for playing with ICS/SCADA systems. While I can't speak for everyone (this type of stuff is about as 'niche', as niche gets, even in the IT security world), I was very impressed with this book and it gave me the jumpstart I needed to begin truly analyzing and testing modern vehicle CAN buses. Very well done, well organized, well cited, and well written. I do hope Mr. Smith expands on this topic in future publications. My guess is that he's now getting paid big bucks to keep his future research "proprietary"...I just hope he's working for a U.S. company. Review: Learn the approach to understanding and modifying automotive control systems - This is a nice reference book if you are curious about the issues surrounding modifying the electronic controls, and the electronic security issues of your car. Anything in print that attempts to be a how-to publication risks being out of date as soon as the ink is dry. This book takes the approach of illustrating how to learn to think about strategies for documenting, reverse engineering and modifying an automobile’s control systems to better suit the owner’s desires. In this context, hacking mostly refers to making one’s own beneficial modifications her/his own car rather than intruding into the systems other vehicles. There is something to be gained here for the automotive designer and electronically savvy car hobbyist.

The Definitive Vehicle Pen-Test Text
This book is great. It's packed with loads of information on 'car' tech, with very little coverage of what penetration testers already know. It's not bloated with code just to fill pages. I think every CAN tool is covered, addressed or acknowledged. This book is just the absolute best. The only critique I have is to say that some of the schematics are just way too small for me to read.

Good book walking the user through automotive CAN networks
This book is a good summary of automotive CAN networks, their usage and their current state security flaws. As an engineer, this book is a good reference to different tools you can use to analyze and send data to automotive CAN networks. It is a good read, I highly recommend this to anyone interested in tinkering with automotive electronic networks.

If you want to get a great understanding of modern car networks, buy this book!
You won't find a BETTER book to explain the complex systems that the modern auto has built in nowadays. Simple and concise, my ASE certified mechanic nephew STOLE my copy after reading the first chapter at my urging! He showed it to the other mechanics where he works, and they agreed it really does a GREAT job of simplifying and explaining the digital networks that control modern cars.

This book is great for learning about the CAN-bus
This book is great for learning about the CAN-bus, common automotive electronics, and automotive security vulnerabilities. It teaches you a very dangerous skill set, so if you're a morally bad person then please don't buy this.

Money well spent in my opinion.😎
I only had qrick read of it so far and I'm founding it interesting to do with cars. I'm not really a car person but I some people who are. So I thought it would be good to meet half way in conversation.😅 The paper for us also a good to touch and not easily to rip by mistake at least.😑

Very Practical
If you’ve ever looked at your car and thought, “Nice… but what if it betrayed me over CAN bus?”, then this book is absolutely for you. It starts out innocently enough, some electronics, some networks, and before you know it you’re side-eyeing your dashboard like it’s plotting against you. The best part is that the explanations are surprisingly clear and hands-on, so even if you’re not already an automotive cyber-wizard, you’ll feel like one… until you realize how many systems are actually talking behind your back. This is not a casual “Sunday read”, it’s more like “I just spent 4 hours learning how my car thinks and now I’m slightly paranoid,” but in a good way. Highly recommended for penetration testers, curious engineers, or anyone who wants to feel simultaneously smarter and less relaxed every time they start their engine.
