Can you just wear head band and no ear plugs? Like will it keep water out or you have wear both?

Anyone do club swim and use this or the original? My teen swims 5x a week and competes, need to keep h2o out until eardrum heals.

I have a son who also swims competitively and needs to keep eardrum dry after recent surgery. Can you tell me what worked best? He has custom ear plugs and silicone cap pulls out plugs. Wondering if ULTRA band it worn over plugs is enough OR he needs to wear plugs, ULTRA band it and then cap.
