I found this on the Willow Tree website:A: The original of each Willow Tree® figure is sculpted and carved by Susan Lordi using a special sculpting clay. Susan's originals are then sent to a factory in China to be cast in resin that exactly captures each of her knife marks. The resin is cured, and each piece is individually hand-painted (and the paint is lead-free).I LOVE mine and have bought several for gifts.

It is curved and stands on it's own. It is all one piece of pressed metal.
