What happens if a light goes out? Do you have to pull a new strip all the way through our can you pull the cover off to replace it easy?

You can pull out the diffuser cover from the end side.and then change the new led strip to install inside of the led drywall channel.

If you put this directly in the middle of studs. The drywall is free floating 8 inches each way. Is more support needed behind drywall?

You shouldn’t need any additional support. I installed mine in between studs to have open access behind for wires and connections.
