Drives Mosquitos away
I live in Tulsa Oklahoma. I have a large pond bordering my property and three garden ponds in my back yard. My deck was not usable during mosquito season. We have a ton of birds and lightning bugs at night so I always hated spraying my yard. I have had the thermacell radius for about two weeks now. We are going out on the deck every day between 5 and 6 pm and staying a couple of hours. I have not had one mosquito bite. It does not drive away any other kind of bug that I can tell, but I only bought it for mosquitos and I am very happy with the performance Be sure to turn it on for 15 minutes before going outside. We have been religious about this. It is very easy to operate and the refill price works out to about 50 cents per hour. Very worth it for me. It uses a batter that has to be recharged. It uses the standard 5 volt charger similar to your phone, which means you can also charge it from an auxiliary battery if you forget to charge it. Battery is advertised to work for 6 hours. My only problem now is that it is getting hot and I am going to have to make decisions about whether to use this unit and be hot or turn on the evaporative fan to cool down. I am confident that the thermacell will not be effective in the wind either from nature or a fan. Hopefully, the fan can blow the mosquitos away. I would absolutely recommend this product. I would also suggest that you keep refills on hand because they are sometimes out of stock and they seem to have some shipping restrictions. And one almost gotcha. I had some refills in the amazon cart and when I went back to check out, they had gone from $20 to $45. So watch out for price fluctuations and don't pay more than $20. When that happened I just ordered from Cabala's.

Works well, but don't expect miracles
I went back and forth quite a bit in purchasing this. $50 felt a bit high, especially with all of the negative reviews, but, I generally trust Wirecutter and they raved about it. After getting harassed all summer by mosquitos in my backyard, I eventually decided to pull the trigger. I did definitely notice a difference using this versus nothing and I think most of the people claiming it does not work either: 1) didn't give it enough time to heat up (takes 15 minutes minimum) or 2) have such a bad mosquito issue nothing short of deet spray will help. It certainly has its issues, but I think it's a great addition to your arsenal to use in combination with other things. If I am going to be outside for an extended period of time, I will still spray some permethrin on myself and also light some mosquito coils. What makes this useful is that it barely produces any sort of smell or mist, so using it on an outdoor dining table is ideal, for example. My mother-in-law often complained about the coil smoke while we were eating and this is a lot less obtrusive. Anyways, I think it's worth the purchase, just don't expect miracles.

Nearly Odorless, Works Okay at Close Range
The Thermacell mosquito repellant is a tiny rechargeable device that uses disposable cartridges to repel mosquitos. It's supposed to work in a 15 to 20-foot zone, but outside, with or without wind, we found that the effective radius was less than 3 feet. For us, it works best when placed at seat-level., and my wife places it between our chairs that are practically touching. This unit emits a small stream of 'smoke'. The refills are expensive, and they last about 40 hours for the new series. My wife loves this, but given it's small radius of effectiveness, I'm not sure I'd buy it again, especially given the cost per hour of use (three pack of 40-hour refills are currently $38.59, which equates to $0.32 per hour).
