Why this is the best choice
I will be calling this gadget a shoehorn throughout my review although I understand that is no longer an acceptable term, with the preferred usage being footwear dressing accessory. THREE ERAS OF SHOES There were three eras of shoes in the history of humans - first came the era of utility in which a piece of leather or cloth was wrapped around the feet after people learned that walking barefoot caused cuts and bruises and made their feet feel cold in winter. The second era, the golden one, was relatively recent when shoemakers took great care to use the finest of materials, hand sewn and made to last years if not decades. The most recent era arrived when footwear became disposable, made of cheap plastics or imitation leather, and an item that most people had a closet full of different styles and colors and a shoe to fit every occasion. It was during the middle era that shoes were measured by a professional and custom ordered and with every purchase came a shoehorn, a simple device that helped ease the wearer’s foot into the shoe. A GOOD SHOEHORN IS HARD TO FIND The original shoehorns were made of animal horn (hence the name shoe horn) or bone or other dense natural materials including rare woods. But the professional shoemaker, and hence the person who personally slid them onto your foot the first time, usually used a thin metal device with a very specific curvature to it and a finger-shaped hook to easily pull it out once the shoe was on the customer’s foot. THE SHOE IS ON THE OTHER FOOT Coming full circle I was able to locate this fully classic design, made identical to the way those original metal shoehorns were made in the past century, with every bit the same design, style, ergonomics and durability. The only difference, due to modern inflation, is the price. But if you want it you have to pay the price. IS IT ANY GOOD I inherited a box of old pens and other things from my great aunt and among the treasures was a shoehorn made out of bone and another made of stainless steel. Somehow in growing up I lost it and have always wanted another, not all shoes slip on easily these days. I found this one and I was pleased that it came looking like a quality product, well protected and in excellent condition. To me it was worth it to get something that will probably last forever and is exactly suited to its task. YES NO MAYBE All of this comes down to the summary that I like this, the people who made it obviously knew what they are doing and it is everything I expected it should be. There is not one thing that stands in the way of this earning a full five stars.
