Yes, but new generation games aren’t compatible and will not download to the storage device.

Can i play games directly off the hdd or do i have to install them back on the console?

As long as the game is installed on the HDD and it is plugged into the console you can play any PS4 game you have installed on the HDD. If you get an error message saying the HDD is corrupted or the console doesn't recognize it just unplug it from the console and plug it back in. Good luck.
