I'm 5'2 and 172 lbs curvy shape and I purchased l/Xl and don't run down but I could have gone a size smaller so I would certainly suggest you purchase M/L.

I'm 53 and165 pounds what size should I have

I am 5'2-5'3 and about 150-155 and I bought the S/M. They are skin tight on me, which is what I wanted so I could wear them under my dresses and very long tunic tops with my knee and ankle boots. I do not dry mine when I wash them. Since I am short, I can pull mine up very high to cover all of my unwanted "curves" in my torso area. ;) You could probably go with either size since the have a lot of stretch. Maybe buy both to try one from each pack and then return the set that you like the least. Hopefully this helps.
