What do the #12 and #14 mean? I was told I need a 5/16 inch x 3 inch long

Dear Customer, the #12 and #14 mean the thread size. #12 means the thread size is about 5.2 to 5.5mm. #14 (thread size 6.0mm to 6.25mm). If you are looking for 5/16 x 3 inch long. I'm afraid you are not looking for self drilling screws because normally the largest size for hex washer head self drilling screw is #14. However the 5/16 screw thread size is 0.3125 inch, 7.9mm. What drive size (5/16" or 3/8") do these #12 size 1 In long screws require?

It is 7mm, I thought they woul be your standard tek screw, but no. 7mm

Will these work drilling through sheet metal covering wood beam?

I've only used them to go through wood attached to an aluminum frame which works well. You may need to drill a small pilot hole in the sheet metal first, as it's harder than the aluminum I am going through.

Can I use these to attach wood 2 X 4's to 1/4" aluminum carport frame? Is 2 1/2" length appropriate for this use?

I would say yes. I used them to go through an aluminum ramp into the side of PT 2x4 to secure decking
