There's a lever in the ratchet you press with your thumb that releases the rope as long as you are holding it (the lever): it allows you to pull out as much rope as you need to get the rope as long as you need.

No. you have to pull on rope. It's more of a tie down. You could hoist an item. But if it's a 50lb item; your lifting the full 50lbs
