Start of Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD

This collection focuses upon the early appearances of Nick Fury as the chief of SHIELD. According to Stan Lee he was inspired by the TV show Man from UNCLE to re-create Nick Fury as a modern spy after his run with the Howling Commandos as a World War II hero.Fury made his first appearance in his new guise in Fantastic Four #21 which featured the Hate Monger as the villain. Fury was actually working for the CIA at the time, but it was his first time as a spy.In Strange Tales Fury got half a comic shared with Doctor Strange. In those issues you got a series of foes that would last for years in the Marvel universe such as HYDRA, the Fixer and Mentallo, and AIM.The stories were all by Stan Lee with a variety of artists, but really Jack Kirby was the standout. He got to draw all his detailed devices and backgrounds with the gadgets used by SHIELD, HYDRA, AIM, and the Fixer.

Long Live the S.H.I.E.L.D.!

If you're a fan of the hit TV show "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." or Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then you should get this graphic novel featuring the early adventures of Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the 60s. It opens with "Fantastic Four # 21" where Fury teams with the Fantastic Four against the Hate-Monger. Then in "Strange Tales #135", Fury was recruited into S.H.I.E.L.D. as the leader. Then in "Strange Tales #136-140", Fury & S.H.I.E.L.D. takes on Hydra. Then in "Strange Tales #141-143", Fury & S.H.I.E.L.D. battles Fixer & Mentallo. Then in "Strange Tales #144-145", Fury & S.H.I.E.L.D. battles Druid. Then in "Tales of Suspense #78", Fury joins forces with Captain America against a robot send by A.I.M. Then in "Strange Tales #146-149", Fury & S.H.I.E.L.D. takes on A.I.M. The story concludes with "Strange Tales #150" where Fury & S.H.I.E.L.D. once again battles Hydra. If you're a fan of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", then this book will tell you everything you need to know about S.H.I.E.L.D.

Don't Yield, Back S.H.I.E.L.D.

Been waiting for this a long time. Originally, I'd read only Strange Tales #137 (acquired by my older brother). But subsequent issues were not forthcoming due to the TRUE scarcity during the Marvel Age of comics: Money. Thus, I missed issues #138 - #150. Still, the introduction of Tony Stark as Nick Fury's recruiter and S.H.I.E.L.D.'s head honcho of the Special Weapons Division continues to send shivers down my spine. Included are Fantastic Four #21 (Fury's first spy mission) and Tales of Suspense #78 (Recruitment of Captain America as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent). Villains include The Hate Monger, HYDRA, Mentallo & The Fixer, The Druid, A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) and THEM! Highly recommended . Don't Yield, Back S.H.I.E.L.D.

The King makes this book work.

Some of the SHIELD stuff was great, some was just ok, some was poor. One of the things I enjoyed was Kirby's artwork. Really, the guy could do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. Kirby makes this book. Even if there were no words, just looking at the nutty gizmos and gimmicks were great.
