these window bars are sturdy (estimated 12 AWG)
Constructed of powder coated steel, these window bars are sturdy (estimated 12 AWG). They offer flexibility in lengths to adjust to most windows. There are no color options (other than white) at this time. I purchased 2 sets of these at $125 plus shipping, and I found them to be worth it at that price (they have since decreased in price). The supplied screws leave much to be desired - others have mentioned the difficulty in installing them, let alone the difficulty in uninstalling them, as intended, but that can be overcome with patience, soap, and pre-drilling - they are about 1.25" in length and in most applications would not be long enough to be embedded in the rough-in framework around your window that would provide the strength. However strength should be less of a concern, because anything can be broken into; delaying the intruder is the primary objective as a deterrent. If you plan to use the supplied screws, you will need at least 1/2" embedded length, but the flange on the bar itself is already 7/32" thick; plan accordingly. Screws of #8 size diameter will work with this product; anything larger will likely result in the need to drill out the holes in the flanges to accommodate. The annular space between the two bars, sleeved together, is about 1/8". Overall, quality control is pretty good; however, I will mention that some flange plates are not welded perpendicular to the bar (<5% of the welds at 2-5 degrees deflection, which seems like a negligible angle but can be prominent when flush mounted to a sill, showing as gaps). In addition, I was provided an extra piece (half of one bar, so to speak) in one of my two orders. An important consideration is that these will not meet fire/building code egress requirements for a bedroom, as they are permanently mounted. In contrast, many other window bars on the market provide for emergency removal and would meet fire/building codes. Overall, they are a high quality product and I would purchase again.

Great product. Non-descript and blends in with the windows when positioned to align with the window mullions. My windows have simple sheers so these are nearly invisible. I have a historic home in a rural area where I spend weekends. There is a security system but these bars are for added protection. Easy to install and well made. Exterior windows bars are visually obtrusive. A note of precaution; these bars should not be installed on bedroom windows or any room without multiple exits in case of a fire.

Feeling more secure...but muscles sore from hand driving screws in awkward location!!
These bars appear to be pretty strong. Installing the one-way screws (included) can be a pain. There are drill chuck adapters you can buy to power in this type of screw, BUT the width of the drill chuck does not let you get to the screw. The bar and the screw hole are so close together you need to use a flat head screwdriver. Here's what worked for me. Measure and mark the screw holes. Check level with spirit level. Drill an initial (top) hole with a drill bit that is a little smaller in diameter than the screw. Put a small amount of dish washing liquid on the screw threads. This will ease your effort in driving in the screw with just muscle power. Use a flat head screwdriver with a blade tip at least as wide as the screw head, preferably a little wider if possible. Insert the first screw, but don't tighten it down. Drill the next screw hole on the other end of the bar, again at the top hole mark. Insert the screw and drive it in, but not fully tightened down. Use a spirit level to check the overall bar level. Insert the bottom screws at each end of the bar. Tighten down all screws - you are done!

Perfect protection for me and pet
Two reasons for buying these: 1) I like to sleep with bedroom windows open and 2) I have an indoor only cat who has pushed screens out in the past. These bars keep us both safe. Unlike bars I've used in the past, these offer more flexibility in adjustment. In my case, I put 3 bars in each window spaced so that kitty can't get through while allowing enough opening for air to circulate. Plus the fit inside so no issues with community restrictions on external window bars. I would suggest using longer screws than it comes with for extra security.
