Does the effectiveness of this device rely more heavily on ignorance of the user, or on simple superstition?

Can anyone tell me or point me to where the instructions are on how to care for my mat?

All I do is use a mild soap and warm water to gently wipe with a cloth the smooth part that comes into contact with my feet or hands. Nothing harsh, definitely no machine washing!

Can I fold the 35.4"x26.6" mat and still be able to have it work with damaging it?

Probably not a good idea as you might break the silver wires within. I just let it lay out fully and use it as a mouse pad or under the top 1/3 of space under the pillow.

Is it OK to leave it plugged in even when I am not using it?

Mine is plugged in 24/7 , no problems.
