Is the "top" of the cylinder tapered to insert into my chair? I assume this is industry standard.

It is. The bottom taper is not as much as a standard Aeron cylinder. It makes you need a shorter cylinder.

Is this chrome? It does not look shining in the pictures.

My current drafting chair says it goes from 22.5" to 30.5" which is an 8" stroke. Will this rod extend 2" higher since it's a 10" stroke?

It didn't go as high as we thought. We bought a longer gas lift cylinder to replace the one that came with it.
