Are holes 1-1/2” center to center? Will they both hit a stud?

No it is wider I installed them vertically so both screws hit a stud

What’s the thickness of the backplate?

Mine are all mounted but it was like 1/8 to 3/16 Inch thick!

thickness>1.5 inches. so sorry, we have instruction in the package. we don't have video.

how thick must the shelf be?

If you are using solid woods hard woods like maple or oak or walnut, you could, in theory do 1" thick pieces. Keep in mind though your drill hole must be perfectly centered to give equal meat over and under the post. I just installed 1 1/8" shelves - but I also have 17" drill press that allowed me to get precision hole placements.
