HOW LONG are the bristles* by themselves ?

The bristles are long enough for short hair, however if you have long hair, this brush will not brush through your hair, it would only brush the surface or around your edges. Hope this answers your question. 🙂

Is this $22. brush 100% boar or WHY isn't it listed as such?

There are plastic bristles mixed in.

What are the bristles made of. Are they synthetic?

These bristles are not synthetic. The normal bristle, which we use to fill our hairbrushes, comes from long haired boars.
