Do we have to remove the black piece under the hood to install this ?

This material should be used with the silver side facing a heat source. If you send us a picture of what you are trying to install it on, we may be able to answer the question better. Interior no, all of our materials must be kept 2" away from any heat source.

I am looking at this to place inside of a metal shed that I have in my back yard. Will it work or do I need to stick it to the outside?

Thermal Block (and all thermal deflectors) are used on the hot sides of projects pointed directly at the heat source. Theya re used on engine side firewalls/hoods, undercarriages above exhausts and drive trains, etc. Sounds like your project needs a thermal insulator, like our Heat Wave Pro sheets for keeping the hot air outside and cool inside.

If used under the hood, does it really keep the top of the hood cooler so as to protect the paint or is a yute version better??

Yes, this is a heat shield or thermal blocker. So, when used across the hood, it will keep the heat from getting to the hood metal, which in turn will keep the paint job on the paint safe from any high heat issues under the hood. Jute, the material we use in our Heat Wave Pro is a thermal insulator, which means it absorbs the heat to keep it from getting through, not block it. Both are exceptionally good options for hood undercarriage. Jute also offers some sound absorption, unlike heat shields, which just focus on the heat.
