Can spikes be used in June in Texas?

I am not sure , as it late in the season and Texas is so much warmer then MN. I would wait till Fall when it cools down, Tommy

What happens if I put it less than 2 feet closer? I don't have the room around my shrub for that.

Putting the fertilizer stake closer than recommend may be too much for the roots. I would try maybe cutting it in half and put it in two different places around your bush. That would help the fertilizer be less concentrated in one place. You may have to dig a small hole to bury the two pieces, rather then trying to pound them in the ground.

Are these good for date palms?

You could use these but Jobes actually makes Palm fertilizer stakes that would be better for your usage. Personally, I find these Spikes work for my regular trees, Citrus for the fig, and lemon tree. These products are easy to use, and so far as I can tell have worked well, wherever I have used them.
