Can I lay this on top of a hvac unit in the attic crawlspace to deaden sound?

Personally I would not do that. It's likely to absorb condensation moisture from the unit and attract mold and mildew. Instead, I would install Roxul 2' x 4' bats around the unit, but not against or on top so as to avoid the condensation absorption.
