Can you push the handle down or does it have to stay upright?

It swivels from left to right. My handle is always down. :)

Has anyone used this for clearing a home (epsom salt, alcohol & lighting a fire)? I know I’ll need to put it on a surface that is heat resistant.

There are far better and traditional things you can burn to purify structures that are not a raging blue fire, But yes you can do that in here. Just clean it out because salt will rust the cast iron.
