Provides the right amount of facts/tidbits - not too little, not too much. Review: How this great nation came to be - A great overview that helps to understand that formidable--and at times, fearsome--nation that sits on both Europe and Asia, and was once the other member of the bi-polar world within which many of us were born and raised in. Its vast geography and turbulent past, as seen here, forged the great nation that Russia has been--and has not been! Also, we understand why the October Revolution was possible as well as why it was so easy to form the soviets, and why the last Tsar had to die as he did.

A great compendium
If you are looking for an in depth look into Russian history and other significant events in the forming of Russia you will be disappointed with this group of short overviews. However it is an excellent and concise overview of the topics with numerous references if you decide you want to explore the topics in depth.

A Long and Complex History well done
I received an advance copy of this book so that I could submit an early review. However, I volunteered to do early reviews because I really like the Captivating History series. The books are written on a wide variety of historical subjects. They are relatively short, but packed with information, so the reader can understand the subject without making a huge time commitment. I do like these subject matter compilation books that Captivating History puts out. I read their European History and it left me thinking that I didn’t know much about Russian history and, specifically, the Russian Revolution, so I was happy to see this compilation book. The first book is an overview of Russian political history, meaning that it follows the leaders of the Russian states and then Russia as a whole through its history. When doing a concise history on such a broad topic, choices have to be made about what to cover and this seems like a reasonable way to organize things. I’m glad they included a deeper dive into the Russian Revolution because I wanted to get more in depth about the why’s and how’s of what caused it and why it failed to live up to its ideals. Like the other Captivating History books, I think I have gained a good base of knowledge about a country I knew little about, except as it involved their interaction with the U.S.A. Definitely recommend.

Dreadful amateurish production
This Print-On-Demand book doesn't include authorship, the bulk of it's research appears to come from the internet. There are no maps and a few muddy worthless illustrations. The writing is dull and not at all "captivating" . My copy went in the trash the day I received it.

A good overview of the History of Russia.
A good overview of the History of Russia. Too bad the book lacks maps to visually support the historical events and data. However, if you like history, this is a book must have.

A clear and concise history of Russia
A well presented history of Russia and he revolution. I like that the chapters are short, so get a nice feeling of making progress through the book. The chapters describe the important events and people that shaped Russian society and the country as a whole. Having read the book(s), I have a much better idea of Russian people and the country within the context of the present World geopolitics. I would highly recommend this book to get a quick and concise understanding of Russia.
