What can you say about a 1 lb tub of lard? Read on ...
Many years ago, I fell in love with Cuban sandwiches, via several Cuban-Chinese restaurants in the 80's and 90's on Broadway in Manhattan. They are not widely available in places I have lived since leaving NYC (Virginia, and now greater Baltimore). I recently moved into an apartment where it has become easy to deploy an older George Foreman Lean Mean Fat Grilling Machine that we own -- and I immediately thought of Cuban sandwiches, a delicacy for which this grill is well suited in home use. Two problems, (1) you have to provide your own roast pork, and (2) where to find Cuban bread. Cuban bread is not so easy to come by in the Baltimore area, and I looked into backing it myself. There are a number of recipes, and some of them strongly recommend incorporating lard in the batter. Lard is also not a regular at the main supermarkets in the area. In the meantime, I have decided against baking my own Cuban bread. There are alternatives. I've ordered Cuban buns from Galaxy Bakery (Miami) through Amazon. They work. There are other sources (non-Amazon) that I plan to try. I've also found that there's a small Latin market quite near me. Don't know if they have Cuban bread (or lard), but they advertise plantains. Fried plantains are another delicacy that I miss from my NYC days. In the meantime, I ordered this 1 pound tub of lard from Amazon. Most lard orders appear to be oriented to commercial use, i.e. a much larger quantity that I would ever use. The 1 pound tub is a reasonable size. I'm not using it to make bread, but I use it to coat the sandwiches when I put them on the Lean Mean Fat Grilling Machine. It's fine.

good quality, good flaver....research the benefits.
Might be expensive for the amount but it's amazing how this changes the flavor of fried foods...better than olive oil, maybe as good as butter!
