Is it compatible with apple phone?

Yes, it is compatible with iPhone. With regards to the vibrations that Waystation49 were referencing, they may be turned off. You may set up a silent alarm which is a vibration as well as a sedentary alert which reminds you when you have been sitting too long and to get up and move which may be disabled. The “strobe light”they were referring to is the heart rate sensor which you will not see unless you are changing the bands or take the Fitbit off because the green sensor is on the bottom which rests against your wrist. If you do not wish to have your heart rate monitored, you may also disable this function. You do not have to have a subscription for the Fitbit to work. You will need to download the Fitbit app to monitor your activity. Fitbit will give you a free one year trial subscription of their Premium Fitbit app accordingly to the product description and after that you will be charged for if you keep Premium. There is no charge for the regular Fitbit app; I have had the Fitbit app since 2014 and it hasn’t cost me one penny.

No you don’t have to but you miss out on function if you don’t.  And if you wanna change the clock face you have to do that on the app which you need to download on your phone. You can view reports on your phone. You can get detailed sleep data on your phone. It’s just better if you sync with your phone.

Is this compatible with an iPad?  I'm looking to purchase this for someone who doesn't own a smartphone, but has an Ipad.

Other posters are wrong. It CAN be read in the sun. There is two adjustments that effect the brightness: Sleep Mode and Dim Mode. Both can be adjusted on the watch itself. Easy peasy and makes all the difference. Don't give up on this watch. It's super!
