A "WOW" company with incredible generator parts knowledge and helpful frustration-avoiding tips!
First, I bought my parts from amazon.com and no one asked me for a review. But, after my extraordinary experience, I feel I must. And, all I can say is “Wow! Wow!! WOW!!! Generator Parts Specialists are “above and beyond” with their customer service and helpful technical information! Dealing with them is one of the best customer service experiences I can ever remember. Scott is a pro with generators who really knows his stuff! He answered my questions not only with accuracy and detail, but with extra tips that saved me problems and, undoubtedly, constant frustration. I’ll never buy anything for my generator from anyone else! It’s impossible for me to say enough good things about this company. I highly recommend you make Generator Parts Specialists your go-to company for anything/everything you need for your generator. You will not regret it, ever! To be clear, the generator parts specialists folks are NOT customer service staff just sitting at their desks. They clearly have serviced and know how to service all types of generators . . . because that’s exactly what they do in their business along with being extremely knowledgeable and helpful about parts they sell. I’ll never be able to properly repay Generator Parts Specialists for the free problem-solving advice and tips they provided. It saved me immense grief and consternation, to be sure. Now, here’s the backstory, which will give you a better picture of Generator Parts Specialists' exceptional and amazing effort helping me. I bought a 2004 vintage 5th Wheel RV in great part because it had a 3600 watt Cummins Onan propane generator already installed. (New purchase cost of the generator was about half of what I paid for the entire Coachmen 5th wheel.) The genset had only 95 hours on it, which meant it was barely broken in. I found the user manual for the unit, but it didn’t help much because it lumped together diesel, gasoline and propane models in one description. Since diesel and gas models are the big sellers, it barely mentioned anything about the propane units like mine. Then, I couldn’t find much online about Cummins Onan propane generators. And the Cummins Onan website was no help at all to me. I emailed Cummins Onan customer service several times and got no help except “we recommend you take it to your closest authorized Cummins Onan dealer” (who was about 90 minutes away from me, forget that). My last email, about a month ago, was completely ignored by Cummins Onan, not even an acknowledgment let alone useful answers to my questions about correct parts and oil, etc. All I wanted to do was change out the basic service parts -- filters, oil, spark plug, etc. -- before I used it since it has been sitting for 3 years, or more, completely unused and not even “exercised.” As much as I searched online, I couldn’t find part numbers that I was 100% sure were correct for my genset, because, again, gas, diesel, and propane are all lumped together and there must be hundreds, if not thousands, of combinations of Cummins Onan generator models from all their years of manufacturing. Example: my genset is a 2004 Model KY 3600 Spec L. It turned out the parts I needed were for: Model KY 4000 Spec A-P Non-Evap Models. How the heck was I supposed to guess that? Cummins Onan sure didn’t help and does not provide a reference or translation chart. The bottom line is that when I found a “Tune Up Kit” for a Cummins Onan KY model here on amazon.com, I inquired of the seller before I bought it whether it was the correct kit for my generator. They responded immediately saying NO, and advising me I needed an alternate kit. I ordered. I got it. Easy, like it should be. Then I followed up with a few other troubling-to-me questions to Generator Parts Specialists to which I could find no answers (and got no help from Cummins Onan), like: -- Q: What’s the correct oil filter? A: (from Scott) Propane generators don’t have one. (A fact not in the Cummins Onan user manual.) (Note: When is the last time you owned a non-2-cycle engine, gas or diesel, that used oil for lubrication and did not also have an oil filter? For me, never.) -- Q: What size Torx/star bit for the oil drain cover, as I have to buy bits? A: (from Scott) “I went to the shop to see if we had a KY model at a workstation. But, no. So from memory a T25 for small fasteners and a T40 . . . holding the cover in place.” (Note: I finally bought an inexpensive set of Torx bits. Scott was correct on both sizes.) -- Q: What are the other covers with Torx bolts on the bottom of the generator? (Nothing is shown in Cummins Onan drawings.) A: (from Scott) “On the bottom, the oil drain is about all you should need to access. If access is bad, it’s pretty easy to use a hand pump to remove the old oil, just warm up the engine first.” -- Q: The manual says to clean out ports on the muffler, but I can only access one of two that are supposed to be there? A: (Scott) “The muffler has a spark arrestor inside that can build up some carbon deposits over time, but propane doesn’t carbon up. You can leave the muffler alone without guilt.” Then he volunteered other “tips” I wasn’t even smart enough to ask about: -- About spark plug replacement: Unsolicited TIP: (from Scott) “There’s not much room for a socket handle . . . so, get a spark plug socket that has a hex on the outside. Put the socket up on the plug and use an open end wrench to turn it.” (Note: It worked! And saved me a lot of frustration!) -- About general propane issues: Unsolicited TIP: (from Scott) “Since it is propane, not gasoline, the storage issue (not being used for 3 years) is likely much less an issue than it could be. Knock off any dirt daubers or insect nests . . . There is also a fuel regulator vent line. Be sure it is clean because spiders, etc. like to nest inside and that can prevent the fuel regulator from functioning properly. (Note: Sure enough, I found several dauber nests. And, the fuel vent tube was completely plugged up. Had Scott not volunteered this advice, I would have been hard-pressed to ever get the generator running again, at least without great exasperation and probably high levels of anger.) -- And, numerous other invaluable bits of information. All worth a great deal to someone trying to service a Cummins Onan propane generator the very first time. A few minutes of time and some seriously professional knowledge offered up have made me a customer and an advocate of Generator Parts Specialists for life! If you own a generator, you should be their customer, too. Wow! Wow!! WOW!!!

Convenient Tune-Up Kit for Generator Maintenance
A practical maintenance kit that looks like a smart buy for keeping an RV generator running reliably. Bundled service parts can save time versus sourcing each piece separately. Heads up: double-check model compatibility carefully, because generator parts are not forgiving on fit.
