The Best Purchase I Made for Our Little Dog (Maltese) - She Uses It Every Day
I have been using Piddle Place for a couple months now. Our maltese uses it multiple times a day and enjoys it. Overall I have recommended this to all my friends with little dogs. If you dog is under 15 lbs and stays indoors and presently uses pee pads, I would not hesitate to pick this up. It is well worth the money. Prior to this, my dog used the All-absorb Training Pads 100-count, 22-inch By 23-inch and we would go through 2-4 per day depending on the day. I also took her walking about 10 times a week, so most days she did have a walk. However some day it would rain and she would use the pee pads exclusively. We have since switched to the Piddle Place and no longer use any pee pads. She still gets walks 5-10 times per week but I estimate she uses the piddle place 2-5 times a day. On rainy days she uses it for both pee and potty. Q: Does it smell? A: No, it does not smell at all. I use the Bio+ Treatment Base Unit Maintenance (Set of 4) . I change it about every 2-3 weeks because she is a small dog. I know that it recommends changing it weekly, I do not. I should note that with the pee pads, I could absolutely smell the pee even from the next room. So it's not like my dog's pee doesn't stink =) Q: Some sellers won't ship me the spray, can I still use this? A: I live in Hawaii, people hardly ship me anything. Yes, I bought Bio+ Treatment Base Unit Maintenance (Set of 4) and what I do is I mix it with 10 oz water instead of 8 oz. I then pour 8 oz into the base unit. I then mix 6-8 oz more with the leftover 2oz in the cup, and pour that into a spray bottle. I use that as my enzyme spray. So far so good. Q: Pee and poo? A: Yes, although pee constantly throughout the day and some days poo once or none if we walk her. The pee is no issue and it goes right through. The poo we pick up with toilet paper and flush it. Either way I spray it with Bio+ Treatment Base Unit Maintenance (Set of 4) Q: Was it hard to train? A: No, but just like Good Will Hunting my dog is wicked smaht and she picked it up in a day. What I did was put the Piddle Place exactly where her pee pads were, and put the pee pad on top. She peed on it once, and I moved the pee pad below the turf (with pee still on it). I was then able to confirm she continued to pee on the piddle place green patch, and onto the pee pad. I removed the pee pad, and she has been fine ever since. Q: How hard is it to empty? A: Real easy. I take it to the toilet, open the spout and pour the pee out. I also grabbed a regular 2 liter bottle cap and put it over the end just in case to prevent leaks. Seems totally unecessary as it has not been an issue, but I figured I would do that just in case she ever hits the switch to open the spout. Q: How hard is it to clean? A: Easy. I took it to the bathroom and emptied it in the toilet. I then lay a beach towel on the ground. I took the green turf, put some dishwashing liquid on it and wet it. I rub the turf against itself to suds it up and I sprayed it down with our showerhead. Put it on the beach towel to try. Put dishwashing liquid on the plastic base, and just sprayed it up and down with the shower head. Leaned it in the tub, patted the green turf dry, and then picked up turf and put the plastic base on the beach towel. Rubbed the bottom dry, put green turf on and refilled the Bio+ treatment - good to go. Less than 15 minutes to empty out, hose down, dry and refill with Bio+ treatment Q: Does your dog tear up/pick up the "grass"? A: No but other dogs might. See "wicked smaht" note above. In all seriousness, I think our dog is pretty well behaved and plays with toys we teach her to play with. A more playful/curious/rambunctious dog? I could see it being a problem. If they play with their pee pads, they will probably play with the green turf. Q: Does your dog use it for naptime? A: I was worried about this. This is why I let her use a pee pad on top of it first and then put the pee pad underneath. I suspect that even though I use the Bio+ Treatment Base Unit Maintenance (Set of 4) and it doesn't smell at all to me, that maybe she can smell it. So she knows it is her bathroom and not her bed. I think it also helps that we keep a little dog bed maybe 10 feet away and put the piddle place in her "pee zone" in the corner. So she picked it up quick. Q: How much does it cost to maintain? A: I spend about $4-6 a month on the enzyme treatment. I am supposed to change the green turf after 6 months, so that comes out to $4 a month. I am going to assume that this piddle place will last the life of my dog, so lets just round that to $1 a month. I estimate then for a small dog like mine, it is a $10 a month investment to ensure your dog has a nice place to pee and poo, save you time and your house won't smell of pee. To me for the time savings alone it is worth it compared to taking her outside if I even go out 1 less time a day (we take her out 1-2 times a day). However in addition it is actually cheaper than the pee pads I was buying because I was spending $15-20 a month on those. So in a year or two you'll recoup your investment compared to pee pads AND it's a better solution. Overall, five-stars, I paid for it with my own hard earned cash and it was well worth it.

Great Idea but Difficult to Train Older Dogs to Use it
This idea is great, however training a dog who is older and always had a doggie door or outdoor walks will be difficult. My two 10 year old poodle mixes refuse to go near it, I have followed all of the tips, urine soaked paper towels, treats on walks, leaving them in an enclosed space wtith the piddle place and neither of them will have anything to do with it.

Works as advertised, great product perfect for small indoor dogs.
I bought this deluxe kit sometime around November of 2013 as I was in the midst of training my new puppy and was just getting fed up of buying puppy pads. Not to mention, the mess of pads was just tedious as it would always leak or soak through. As a full time student with not a lot of time to spare, I did not always have the chance to take the dog out every couple hours so I decided to give this a shot. After doing research on other dog toilets such as this, I figured this was the best candidate as the dog didn't have to deal with grates and the artificial turf on top provided a more natural appeal to my dog. The turf is like mesh material thus doesn't absorb or retain any piss odor. The wall is also a plus as my dog, being a male, likes to raise his leg. A year later, this thing still functions as it was intended and has kept its quality. The only negative is the pricy enzyme treatment that is encouraged to use weekly with this thing to keep it from smelling, but to be honest, after my supply ran out I haven't ordered any more. I keep this in our walk in closet and as long as you keep it cleaned about once a week the smell is hardly noticeable without any of the stuff. If you got the money for the enzyme, well then I guess it'd be even better as the smell is pretty pleasant. To clean this thing I just empty the pee into the toilet and rinse the whole thing off in the tub. I would recommend using vinegar to pour into the unit and swoosh it around to get all the gunk out, as I hear vinegar destroys urine proteins (seems to work great). I also scrub and use a scented environmental friendly cleaning agent to wash it more effectively. It's been a year and the turf is still in good condition, though I'm considering ordering a fresh new one. The wall holds up good and can be wiped down to get the urine off as well. It is also convenient enough to take it places and my dog will still use it. I see most of the complaints is that people can't seem to get their dog to use it, but honestly I think that is the fault of the owner as I literally kept watch on my dog when it was a puppy constantly throughout the day for about a week. It helps to confine dogs in a room with the potty in it until they are fully trained to use it, as sometimes my dog will forget where it is when I take it places. My dog will go potty on command when I say "go potty," even if he doesn't have to pee he will stand on it and lift his leg up for a second to make it look like he did (lol). Sorry for the long review but I just wanted to say this honestly saved me so much money and stress when owning an indoor dog. It is great for apartments or any place where sometimes taking it outside is inconvenient at times and my dog can go potty whenever he feels like it. Would recommend this to others that have a small dog (mine is a pug). Hope this was useful.

The BEST, MOST AMAZING Potty Spot!!
I don't always give a 5-star for products but I had to with this product I am so in love with it within the first week of having it!!! I was initially hesitant to purchase this because I was wondering if it would be worthy of the high price point. However, after many years of using the Potty Patch on my apartment balconies and not being able to sit out there due to the heavy pee smell, I thought I would make my own self-contained potty until I came across the PIDDLE PLACE and saw that someone had already designed something exactly with my thoughts in mind. I quickly purchased it and so far, my puppies and I are so happy I did. My little Chihuahuas have been trained from pups to first use a litter box and then I transitioned to the potty patch. I tried to keep it clean but it posed many challenges with me often resorting to wearing a mask, goggles, gloves and washing and disinfecting the whole product in our bathtub then having to disinfect our bathtub. This resulted in our whole house smelling of foul urine- unsanitary and very frustrating. I then resorted to using potty pads underneath the grass to catch most of the urine from the mat which helped a lot since I was able to roll up the soaked pee pads and throw them away. I still had to at times wash the mat down as my pups feet would start to really stink walking on that plastic grass to do their business. Here is why the Piddle Place far exceeds other potty patches in quality, cleanliness and convenience: * Completely self-contained- the major problem with the other potty patches is that the pee would sit in a tray right under the mat (rug) and start to smell. If it rained it was a nightmare since living on the top floor I did not want to wash dog pee over the balcony onto my neighbor below so I had to carefully balance a floppy tray through the house to the bathroom to empty it. The Piddle Place has the pee trapped away from the mat in a container with a valve allowing you to pick it up without spillage and open the valve to pour the pee out in the toilet. Also now when it rains, it actually helps clean the entire thing instead of creating more hassle for me. * The BEST part about the Piddle Place is that I can attach a hose to the valve and rinse the potty out with my water hose without getting any pee on my balcony, my neighbors below and without having to even move the potty! * The mat on this Piddle Place is AMAZING!!! My dogs are very clean conscience and one of them really did not like stepping on the dirty wet fake grass. They have no problems with this mat since the poop sits right on the top of the rubber mat and their pee runs right through away from the mat keeping their feet cleaner, drier, no more smelly wet feet! Also the solid waste seems to sit right on top for easy pick up whereas the grass mat always retained some bits of solid waste in it no matter what I did. * EASY to train. Since my dogs were already used to having their own potty spot on our balcony, I just put it in the same spot, put a piece of used pee stained potty pad beneath the mat then encouraged them to do 'good boy potty'. It just took a few moments and they peed straight away on it and have been doing so ever since without fail. They seem to really like the cleaner potty environment. * I have one male dog that prefers to lift his leg always while my other male dog sometime squats and sometimes lifts. The great thing with this is there is a groove where you can put a small wall up so the male dogs can pee on it and it will drain down into the potty tray. Piddle Place provides a decorative wall but I already had corrugated plastic board I was able to bend around the groove and there was their easy-to-clean durable wall to pee on!

Too small for a beagle. Misses the mark constantly.
Well. In my opinion Honestly this item is perfect for a chihuahua, yorkie, pug sized dog. Too small for my 25lb beagle. Training her to use it was no issue at all. She took to it within a few hours. Per day she urinates 6-8 times on it and uses it every time. Teaching her accuracy was the issue. Everyday I'm cleaning at least twice the missed urine on the floor. It's a great product but logistically should only be advertised to small you dogs.

LOVE the Piddle Place - clever design and works as advertised
We have tried so many different dog potty products to the point of exasperation and goodness knows much money has been spent on trying to find something that works. This is the first product that is truly hassle-free and smell-free. Living in an apartment with a patio fully exposed to the elements, we were fed up with the messy clean-up effort involved with the 'Fresh Patch' (real grass on a plastic/cardboard tray), and fake grass over the top of pee pads held by a plastic pee pad holder. Whenever it rained, these potty solutions were a nightmare to clean or dispose of. We have two miniature dachshunds and both of these solutions absolutely wreaked of urine after a few days, even when using urine sprays (e.g. Nature's Miracle). The Piddle Place unit arrived with one week's worth of enzyme solution included. I also purchased the pack with 9 weeks worth of enzyme solution and biotreatment spray. The Piddle Place has minimal steps to setup and involved very basic steps: (1) mixing 1 pack of enzyme solution with 8oz of water; (2) pouring the solution into the reservoir; and (3) cover with the green synthetic matt. The green synthetic matt is quite thick and has a spongy feeling to it, so our dogs took to it straight away. We noticed no wet paws as their urine effectively runs into the reservoir. Also spraying the matt with the biotreatment every couple of days has worked wonders - there are no smells whatsoever, even in stinking hot summer heat I haven't noticed ANY odour. This alone makes this product worth every penny. When it rains, we put the cover over the top - so handy as we previously had to cover the Fresh Patch or fake grass with garbage bags to keep it dry, which was finicky. After 7 days, we placed the lid on the Piddle Place, brought it indoors and disposed of the urine into our toilet. Minimal smell and the release valve is fairly sturdy so no leaks. Initially I thought $100 was fairly steep for this product, however, if you add up the cost of endless products that don't work and the cleaning/kennel care solutions you need to hose down your patio - this product is absolutely worth it. Paying for the enzyme solution and biotreatment spray is the only maintenance cost - that's $30 every 9 weeks which is far cheaper than the $45 every 2-3 weeks on Fresh Patch or the dollars spent on replacing synthetic grass and buying kennel cleaning product. Incredibly happy that we found this - the Piddle Place has worked exactly as advertised. Being able to pour their waste straight into the toilet saves so much time. And we can entertain guests on our patio minus the stinky urine odours!

Allowed me to switch from Potty Patch - Advice below on how
I have a 6 pound Chihuahua and a 10 pound Chihuahua MinPin mix who are indoor dogs. Yes, they go outside for sun and fun, but they were trained to go on a potty patch. After 5 years of being tired of the smelly potty patch and faithfully cleaning it every week in bleach and laundry detergent, as well as using a potty pad under the patch every day - I was sick of this routine. And, it smelled bad, always. I decided to try this system and it took a bit of adjusting, but my dogs made the switch. They had a hard time with the new the pad because it is not plushy like the potty patch. To overcome this, I continued to use a potty pad underneath the piddle pad grass. Over the course of about 4 weeks, I kept making the pad smaller and smaller by folding it under itself until the potty pad was only showing at the border of the piddle grass. To this day, I still keep a potty pad folded in half, then half again, under the piddle grass because my dogs have grown accustomed to the smell of the potty pad. (I use the advanced odor type from PetSmart.) However, I only have to change it every 4 or 5 days. Also, I took a large spray bottle that holds water (for laundry, etc.) and use it as my primary spray. The piddle spray is nice, but quite strong, so I use a few spritzes of the piddle spray each evening under the grass by lifting it up on one side and then the other, not fully removing it but pulling it back only. And then I spray the water on the grass a bit to wash away some of the pee away. I find that by using water as the primary spray after a bit of the piddle spray, the pad seems clean and not overly fragrant. The piddle packets that are poured into the actual piddle unit seems to keep the unit from smelling. I keep mine in the master bathroom. I change the piddle unit about every two weeks and clean the piddle grass with a soak in our utility sink in the laundry about every three, only because my dogs use it for all their potty needs and I don't want things to be stinky. I also find that their poop doesn't stick to the piddle grass as it did the potty patch. This piddle grass is a very different material and doesn't hold smells. However, as I mentioned, it is not plushy, so your pooches will most likely notice the difference in feel. My smaller dog is a boy and he loves to hike his leg, so the back guard is nice, however, I cut mine down so that it doesn't look as obtrusive. I also removed on the sides because it made it look too big. I have attached a picture. I also put a folded potty pad under the upper left hand corner to help it from sliding on my tile floor and it raises it just a slight amount to allow liquid to drain through the channels to the right, going into the unit.

Don't Waste Your Money
While the idea is good, the product is not so much. It is better constructed than similar items and that is the only reason why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. One huge problem, however, is that the valve is loose and leaks whatever is inside. Another problem, in my opinion is that it is too small. My 20 lb Bichon Frise could just stand on it and I haven't met a dog who doesn't walk, turn, sniff, or spin before doing his/her business. It was a better fit for my 13 lb Havachon but she absolutely refused to use it. It is important to note that we bought the Piddle Place for use on our new houseboat. They had no preconceived ideas about appropriate places to eliminate themselves and they consistently urinated/defecated on the wooden dock the minute we took each of them off of the Piddle Place. We tried ALL of the recommendations for training including: putting actual grass/leaves on it, putting little bushes alongside, putting their own urine on it, and putting them in a confined space with the Piddle Place until they went potty. They went next to it in the shower instead. My dogs have been trained to ring a bell to go outside and they had no problem getting on the Piddle Place, if a treat was involved, so they aren't untrainable but, after a month, we have decided that it is just not worth the aggravation. Also, the price is ridiculously high for what you get. Sorry, but I cannot recommend this product.
