It doesn't appear to actually work with k-cups? Are we supposed to just tear open the k-cup and dump in the coffee filter?

Technically, this is advertised for ground coffee. Not as convenient as K-cups but ground coffee is generally less costly and produces less waste than single-use plastic K-cups.

Does this burn the coffee? I currently have an individual coffee maker that burns the fresh ground coffee

This unit is designed to brew ground coffee. You place a couple of spoons of ground coffee in the basket, fill the water reservoir with cold water and press the button. The water is heated and drips through the ground coffee in the basket into your mug/cup.

Does it have a feature to stop if cup isn’t present?

There is no sensor to stop coffee flow if no cup is present.

Do I need to buy extra filters?

The reusable filter is flimsy. Mine cracked after very few uses. So it would be nice if there were filters that size.
