Bassoon !!
Beside the four seasons Vivaldi made so many other very beauty-full works!I have a personal like for bassoons, just love that somewhat poppin' sound and the rithm and the depth of the tones, the way those specific woody and classical tones touch you.. something.. how to explain? It corresponds with my bloodrithm or something alike.. just love it ! It also makes me feel comfortable, relaxing. A kind of very natural and ancient soundcomfort.. My wife said the bassoon is a typical male sound.. Now that this CD is in the player of the car from the arrival and didn't come out yet, she smiles when the car starts and the bassoons start playing in the rithm of the drive.. 'I can dream this music by now', but we both love it. Dreamtime indeed while driving the long rides. Perfect. Some romantic, some vivid and joyfull some referring to the 4-seasons.. Some sadness, melancholics.. Our moods and nature is the ruler..But it is time to take the CD into the house and seek another.Want to hear it now from the coach with eyes closed and letting it come in all detail, the finest little notes.. There is more to be heard in the tempi.. And coming spring and summer this CD will maybe be the one to have playing softly while taking a break, being on the veranda in the day or early evenings..? Like it happens with the violin-concerto's; the birds will probably respond on this one in a nice answer..!!Vivaldi...aah.

Great technique, pace and stylistic interpretation
I was motivated to track down Thunemann's CD after a happen-chance hearing during the early hours on public radio. It grabbed me and I searched through the public library's collection of bassoon concerto CDs trying to find it. I'm a former woodwind player (clarinet) but not otherwise particularly musical nor had an interest in classical music. I Musici and Thunemann have produced a wonderful set of bassoon concertos sure to please. Vivaldi seemed to like composing challenging pieces (he was apparently an instructor in a girl's school for a number of years) and you'll appreciate the intrepretation, pace, technique and style Thunemann adopts. Others didn't compare.

Great for background music, and also for more studied and repeated listening of movements 3, 6, 9, 12, and 18, indicated below
VIVALDI 6 BASSOON CONCERTOS features bassoon wizard Klaus Thunemann accompanied by twelve musicians of the "I Musici.' The 16-page booklet (including front and rear covers) includes a photograph showing these twelve musicians holding their instruments. The disc has six concertos, each with three movements. Thus, the disc has 18 cuts on it. As an initial comment, the disc can be listened to repeatedly and continuously throughout one day, in view of the engaging and pleasant sound of the bassoon. This is in contrast to the sound of chamber or solo recordings that feature the cello, which can become tedious. In fact, I have observed another Amazon reviewer's comments on a recording of Bach's cello solo composition, stating that he was "cello'd out" by the somewhat tedious sound of the cello. Below is are cut-by-cut comments for all 18 cuts on this disc. After jotting down my comments, and then reviewing them, it appeared that I was most fond of the third movement for each of these concertos.F SHARP.(1) Theme is a simple chord progression sounding like a beginning guitar student strumming a progression of several chords. Annoying.(2) Stately and dignified.(3) Compelling and lively tune. Dramatic changes in volume, where there is alternating full orchestra and a smaller string section.B FLAT(4) Has dramatic and loud descending motifs, almost as rapid as a descending glissando. There are many exciting rapid arpeggios from bassoon, sounding like Morse code.(5) Slow and mournful tune in lower register.(6) Happy and playful tune with attractive flourishes from bassoon and strings.E FLAT(7) Jittery and nervous, resembling Fabio Biondi's ultra-rapid recordings of Vivaldi.(8) Warm-sounding slow movement. Repeated throughout is a descending motif that goes: Dee-dah, dee-dah, dee-dah.(9) Perky with punctuating bassoon part. Invites repeated listenings.A MINOR(10) Typical sounding.(11) Begins with layers of string parts, that are layered upon each other and added to each other, one by one.(12) Lively and clever, chugs along merrily.C SHARP(13) Has dramatic sweeping flourishes from strings. At the 90-second time point in this movement, the bassoon notes double in rate.(14) Slow and ominous, but not dull. Sounds like Mozart's Symphonie Concertante K364.(15) Moderate paced like a dignified march. Sounds like dozens of other Baroque compositions.G SHARP(16) On the dull side(17) Also on the dull side.(18) Has a unique theme, with an optimistic 2-note motif heard throughout that goes: Dit-dahhhh! Dit-dahhhh!

Wonderful Performance by Klaus Thunemann
This was my first ever bassoon concerto CD, that I bought back in the early 1990s. At the time I wasn't familiar with Klaus Thunemann nor the Vivaldi bassoon concerti. The playing is very fluid and technically perfect, ornamentation plentiful and idiomatic. So idiomatic that I didn't know those were added by Mr. Thunemannn, and not written by Vivaldi! The recorded sound is natural, and Thunemann's tone shines through. Unfortunately Klaus Thunemann only recorded about 20 of the entire collection of the Vivaldi bassoon concerti.Being a bassoon player and teacher myself, I have a huge library of bassoon recordings. I haven't listened to a recording of the Vivaldi bassoon concerti, on the modern German bassoon, that I like as much as this disc. There is also a 2-CD set, featuring this as well as Thunemann's two other Vivaldi concerti recordings. It is out of print, but can be purchased from third party sellers: Vivaldi: Bassoon Concertos

Fine older disc, Thunemann was the best!
These may be a little hard to find soon, but this disc(and the companion) is really the only one of the aged recordings that is any good. stands up well to all that came after. Also contains my favorite of the 30 bassoon concertos, RV483.I Musici do a decent job. Some of their string concertos are very dated by now. Here, they back to soloist unobtrusively. string parts are vivid enough. Central movements are OK.

this album is a dream of delicacy and perfection no other bassoonist play the vivaldi concertos so beautifully and well as the greatest of all time plus the superb accompaniment of the group I musici.

Nice diversion
Refreshing music new to me. Not obviously Vivaldi when I first heard it.

Wunderbare Aufnahme
