My children truly enjoyed the whole process from digging and the excitement of finding the different pieces and especially the water clean up to see exactly what they got. Will definitely get more to do. Very messy with multiple kids but with it to see the smiles and giggles.

I had a similar kit to this when I was a kid. I gave this one to my daughter for her birthday, as a nice STEM gift that's different from the usual toys. She loved it! It was fun to watch her dig out the pieces and to identify and read about them in the included booklet. The only complaints I have are that the little brush that comes with it is useless (we had other old paintbrushes lying around that work much better to dust things off), and that most of the pieces were all clustered together. That last one is probably variable, but would have been nice to see things more spread out so they weren't on top of each other. Just be aware, it makes a mess, so outside may be best. But what a fun little toy to get kids away from their screens!

I bought this is one of the Christmas presents for my grandson. It’s something I thought he would like but my surprise he did like it but he got very frustrated doing it. It turned out. It was a little too hard for him. He ended up giving up so my son had to finish it for him, so if your grandson or little son doesn’t have the patience, I wouldn’t recommend buying it but to me it’s a wonderful gift just make sure your son or grandson has the patience to sit down and do it. It’s very educational and fun and well worth the money.

Got two of these for my two nieces for Christmas. They really enjoyed digging away at this thing and finding all 20 fossils and gems which kept that busy for a good couple of hours! But towards the end they decided to speed things up with water which quickly turns into a big mess so be warned if you are doing this indoors! It's just plaster so it washes out of course but if water is involved be prepared to have it all over their clothes and floor and table and doorknobs and anything else within splashing distance! If you do them dry you just have some powder and chunks which are easily vacuumed up. All in all it was great fun and they loved all the little things they found!

I bought this for my 5 year old because she was obsessed with dinosaurs, fossils, and gems. I figure this covered all the bases and was an easy gift. She absolutely loves it. It's definitely a messy project, so either do it outside or put it in a pan. That's part of what makes it fun, though. The project isn't something that you can get done in 20 minutes. It's perfect to teach that patience gives rewards. It also comes with a booklet that tells all about the pieces that are dug out and most of the words are simple enough that a newly-reading child can get through it. Unlike the other 3 sets that we've ordered in the past, this one was actually easy enough to get through without soaking in water or having to get adult help. They're easy to clean off, easy to find, but still require time. If you're looking for a gift whether for boys or girls, this one is definitely worth it.

Fabulous! Our grand daughter loved it and spent many hours extracting the fossils and gems. On the strength of this National Geographic product they went and bought the volcano kit.

My son and I enjoyed many f_'ing hours digging the fossils out. Basically me digging, son supervising lmao. Jokes aside, it's great value even if as a parent you'll end up doing MOST of the digging. I really got into it and my son enjoyed it too.

Rarely do I feel compelled to write a review but this gift for my beloved six year old grandson was a total success. He was kept busy (and amazingly quiet) digging away for almost two hours and was delighted with all the goodies inside. Then he had to wash them and proudly put them on display. He was totally absorbed in the process and I could not have been happier. Hoping others have the same results and would gladly recommend.
