How long does it take for the intense burnt plastic smell to go away? It's overpowering.

After 4 months we decided to toss it, but Amazon agreed to a return. The smell is AWFUL. I kept it in the closet when not in use because it stunk up the bathroom, then the closet was permeated with the smell. I've soaked it, put it outside, etc to no avail. Maybe ours was defective, but I would not recommend.
