12 Songs of Christmas

What can I say about Ms Etta James that hasn't been said before? Etta defied categorization and blazed through every genre of music there was and ever would be. When 12 SONGS OF CHRISTMAS was first released I first saw it at J&R Music World and just as quickly as it hit the bins was as fast as it disappeared. I had my doubts because a reviewer of the disc complained that the "jazzy" settings to the songs detracted from her performance but I have to strongly disagree. Part of what Etta the legend she was and always will be is the fact that she adapted the song to how she felt. Just as Billie Holiday and Lester Young were on the same wavelength and knew intuitively just how to compliment each other when performing together (check out their perfect balance in the YouTube video of FINE AND MELLOW) Ms James and Mr Red Holloway have such a musically romantic affinity with each other that it's a shame they did not record other discs together. My personal favourite? "Merry Christmas, Baby" followed by "O Holy Night" and "Have Yourself A Very Merry Christmas" because Ms James proves time and time again that just because one has a good set of pipes that can scream and squal at will, there are times that being straightforward and simple can be the most effective. Miss James's disc will ensure that you have a very merry Christmas--now and forever.

Album wasnt as good as i thought it would be.Classic siinger just not a great album.There are a couple of songs that are good.

Love Etta on this album. Her voice is strong and full of character. The musical accompaniment is in the background allowing her voice to shine and show all its vulnerabilites. Just Lovely. Sounds like she is sitting in your living room. I cannot wait to use this as background for Christmas parties and gatherings.

She was an amazing singer. I was somewhat disappointed in the pace of most of these songs. Not her best work.

Part of my Christmas collection

I'd been after this festive treat from the late, great Etta for ages and couldn't believe the price. I would happily have paid a lot more for this lovely selection of Christmas classics. This lady could have sung the phone book and made it sound good. What are you waiting for..Christmas?!!!

nothing as good as i thought it would be not one i would listen to again to be honest, think etta should have given the jazz feel a wide curve dissapointing but you don't know till you buy
