Excellent little DAC - fixes poor onboard audio instantly
I like to listen to music when working or gaming on my laptop using my Grado SR80e wired headphones, but onboard DACs on most laptops are notoriously bad - and mine is no exception. The fix? A simple external DAC like this one from UGREEN, and it instantly solved the sound quality problem. It’s small, inexpensive, and incredibly straightforward to use: just plug it into a USB-C port, connect your wired headphones, and you’re set. I dual-boot Windows 11 and Debian 13 (Linux), and both recognised the adapter automatically - no errors, no drivers to install, no fuss. Not only does it clean up the noise floor and improve clarity on laptops, but it’s also great for connecting wired headphones to phones that no longer have a 3.5mm jack. If your device has USB-C, this just works. I’ve bought several UGREEN products over the years and they’ve all been well made and reliable, and this DAC continues that trend. Great quality at a sensible price. Purchased August 2025 for £8.99.

Works well for a £7 DAC
Works as a basic DAC. Good for watching TV in bed, listening to podcasts, that sort of thing with price appropriate and easy to drive headphones. For exapmple, with my £300 planar IEMs the sound regresses to sound worse, not BOSE bad but similar to my wife's airpod pro 3s. So, sounding like the sound is largely coming from inside my skull or just in line with my ears and unnatural. Switching to a £100 Cyrus DAC the sound gains depth, width, height, bass, and the bass and treble tones sound different rather than all one tone. So this £7 DAC is great for £7 and for what it is. Just don't expect miracles.

Where are the electronics?
I recently bought a new phone without a headphone socket and was looking for something simple to connect my existing earbuds. I have a couple of DACs already that I could have used but they are bulky and require charging before use. I have a Topping NX2 that I used to amplify the volume from a tablet when on a plane as the maximum volume from the tablet was insufficient for me to hear it over the engine noise. It stopped working on one flight and although it is now fixed I had replaced it with a Fiio BTR5 DAC. The Topping NX5 was about £50 and the Fiio BTR5 was around £100. This is significantly cheaper and while the other devices have more features, I basically use them for the same thing. My wife has previously bought cheap USB C earbuds and these hisses all the time and the sound was lacking so I was concerned about buying this in case it was the same but luckily it are much much better. When I received this earphone interface cable this afternoon, I was surprised by how thin the cable is. Where are the electronics? There has to be a Digital to Analogue Converter and some sort of amplifier hidden in there. When I tried it with my cheap every day earbuds the sound seemed fine but a bit lacking in the mid to upper frequency ranges but when I tried my more expensive earbuds, the sound was much better making it hard to tell the difference between this and the much more expensive BTR5. I think the BTR5 probably is better and an audiophile could probably easily tell the difference but to me they sound very similar. So great value for money and perform best when paired with earbuds costing a bit more than £3. ( I am very hard on wired earbuds so for daily use I've found these earbuds that are fine for normal, non music use.)

UGREEN USB C to 3.5mm Jack DAC Adapter: Seamless Audio for Wired Connections
The UGREEN USB C to 3.5mm Jack DAC Adapter serves as an excellent bridge for those looking to connect traditional wired headphones to modern USB-C devices that lack a dedicated 3.5mm audio jack. When it comes to connection quality, the adapter performs without issue. As a digital connection, it inherently offers a clean signal, further enhanced by its built-in DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter). This integrated DAC ensures there is no perceptible degradation of the audio signal, delivering sound fidelity comparable to a direct connection. The adapter itself is constructed with high-quality components, giving it a premium feel and suggesting durability. In terms of connectivity, the USB-C interface is a significant advantage, ensuring it covers most devices that support audio out via USB-C, which is now a very wide range of smartphones, tablets, and laptops. For users who prefer cabled connections for their headphones, this adapter works very well, providing a reliable and clear audio pathway. It's important to clarify that this particular adapter is designed solely for audio transmission and has nothing to do with charging speed or power delivery.

Decent audio quality and build quality at a good price
Good, so far. I just changed phone to a model which doesn't include a headphone jack. While I do most of my headphone music listening these days using a modded vintage 512GB iPod 5th Gen with its audiophile Wolfson DAC it's occasionally handy to be able to use my wired Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 Over Ear headphones with my phone. This has all the hallmarks of good quality manufacture. The perceived build quality is very refined and stylish. The output sound quality is good. If I anticipated using wired headphones connected to my phone on a regular basis then Ugreen also do a higher specification variant of this rated to 384 KHz / 32 bit although it is about twice the price (ASIN: B0CG5FTHT9 ) and I would probably get that one. By comparison, this one is 96 KHz / 24 bit. Nevertheless this has perfectly acceptable audio quality. I also did a test with my old Samsung flagship phone, an Exynos based Galaxy Note 9 which has a high end Wolfson DAC and still has a headphone jack. I plugged my Momentums first in to the headphone jack on the phone itself and then into this. While there was a subtle difference at best, a slightly different emphasis of vocals, everything else was absolutely fine. The level of detail was about comparable and the soundstage about the same. I didn't do an extensive comparison, but on a quick test (some Esbjörn Svensson Trio (jazz)) there was nothing that glaringly stood out as vastly inferior about this DAC to the premium one in my Galaxy Note 9. For this price tag I have zero complaints about the sound quality. There were no pops, crackles and there was no hiss. Others have remarked on the 3.5mm jack being a little loose. As a brand new item when it's reasonable to expect it is going to be as tight as it is ever likely to be, I agree it is slightly on the loose side, and it's likely to become a little more so over time. Ugreen might consider looking to a different supplier for a tighter fitting 3.5mm inline socket. Still, at this time the headphones plug into the socket and stay plugged in as long as you don't pull on it. I recommend this item, however looking at other reviews, some people have had problems with long term reliability with this item so I can only hope I got a good one. I get the feeling that Ugreen may need to address some issues of Quality Control if, going forward, they want to become as well regarded as the likes of Antec. This does however come with a 2 year warranty, in the UK anyway, which I frankly feel is more than acceptable for a product which costs as little as this.

Doesn't work
I bought for use with the Marshall Monitor III ANC headphones. They come with a 3.5mm to USB C cable which I have confirmed does work, but it's short and I use them with my Quad Cortex which is on the floor. So I bought these for use with a longer 3.5-3.5 cable. Unfortunately I get no sound at all when using this adapter. So for me, it doesn't work.

What more can you ask
I have bought quite a few UGreen products over the years and they have always been excellent quality and function. Well priced too. Easily one of the best component suppliers.
